Aus Golf: Hyatt Regency Coolum vs Pacific Harbour

Anybody have any opinions on which to choose to play?  I only have time to play one.  

We'll be staying at the Hyatt, so it's course closer.  But, over $110.  Resort course.  RTJ.  Site of the current Australian PGA. What condition will it be in next week after the tournament.

Pacific Harbour.  New course by Ross Watson.  Further away.  Looks like a housing development course, without houses yet.  Less than $60 with an on-line coupon.

Bryan,

I have only played Pacific Harbour. It's a decent course, and for less than 60 $ would be an alright deal, I think. There are some very good holes, decision-making throughout the course and although there will be housing in the future, it feels quite out-of-civilisation. Definitely one of the better housing development / resort courses I've played.

If I were you, I'd buy a ticket to Melbourne and play St Andrews Beach as long as it's still open, but anyways, have fun!

Thanks for the feedback. 

We're flying in to Brisbane because it was the only place we could get to on our airline points and it gives us the opportunity to see more of the country over three weeks. 

We will be getting to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and will definitely be going to St Andrews Beach and others, and then to Tas and Barnbougle Dunes.

Coolum has always been a reasonable resort course in my opinion, but still a resort course. Pacific Harbour is reasonable as well.

I’m not sure Coolum is a $50 better course though.

Given Pacific Harbour sounds reasonable, I think we'll go with the lower price.  My wife likes economical courses.  I'll pay the price, but I'd like value for money. 

What's Ross Watson's reputation for designing courses?  We have some architects that are well known and respected here in Canada, but are probably not well known to those outside Canada.  Where does Watson stand in the Australian golf architects spectrum?

Coolum is a clearly superior course. Mind you, neither is Top 40 in Australia.
Pacific Harbour is ok but if I were to split my time between the two courses, I'd probably play Coolum 7 times for every 3 at PH.

I've visited both courses recently. Both in good condition.
Coolum's had 6 new holes debut this week for the PGA.

An important point, the drive from Coolum to Pacific Harbour is boring and a waste of your time in that part of the world.
Play the course that's on your doorstep.

In Australia, I'd say there's Peter Thompson, who builds mounds and bunkers everywhere, Mike Clayton, who builds interesting, strategic courses closer to the Doak / C&C style, and then there's Ross Watson who'd be somewhere in between. He has a sense for strategy but he is not outstanding in any way, but not a bad architect either. This is not a valuable opinion though, I've played to little courses to justify, but thats sort of a feeling...........

I agree Matthew, but is it almost twice the value?

Being that Bryan & his wife have bigger fish to fry later in their holiday, saving a little money at this stage in the trip may be worth it.

My 'Ten Round Split' would be Coolum 6 - PH 4.

Thanks for the additional thoughts.  I think I will see if I can get a twilight rate at Coolum and avoid the boring drive.  Failing that, I think my wife will persuade me that PH is a better idea because of the price.  In these times, peace in the family is a good idea.  At  Barnbougle, I'll push the price ceiling.  And perhaps in Melbourne as well.

Hi Bryan, just another thing to enter into your calculations, the return trip to pacific harbour from coolum is not much short of 200km, so at about $1.25/L for fuel you're looking at close to $20 in fuel getting there and back too, plus an hour of time each way.

I haven't seen the changes at Coolum, but if they aren't offensive - it's a pretty easy choice to stay and play.

Pac Harbour is a 2 hour round trip, which costs you time and money.

If you really wanted to consider another course in the area, play Club Pelican
