I'll offer up my three expert witnesses...

"It is more or less accepted fact that trees are not the best of hazards, for the obvious reason that they unfortunately afford but slight opportunity for the display of golfing skill in extricating the ball from their clutches…but they are undoubtedly charming features in a landscape view."

H.S. Colt

"Trees and shrubbery beautify the course, and natural growth should never be cut down if it is possible to save it; but he who insists on preserving a tree where it spoils a shot should have nothing to say about golf course construction."

George Thomas

“Trees should serve perhaps as the scenery, but never as part of the stage.”

Ian,

I notice there's no quote from Mackenzie... which, I guess, explains the genesis of our discussions on holes #17 and #18 at Cypress Point a few weeks ago  ;D

Jeff:

Mackenzie did write that trees did not belong in play on a golf course and a number of times but apparently he forgot he said that when he did those last few holes on Cypress Point. Some golf magazine reporter asked him how he could be so hypocritical too and Alister totally lost his temper and accused the reporter of being no-good dirty side-winding scumbag and that he must have been thinking of Harry Colt's quote on trees and golf courses.

If ever there were two tress that have zero clutches, it's those two trees in the middle of the fairway on 18.

In all my rounds there I have never seen anyone EVER tee off with an iron.

The assumption that the corridor is not wide enough, is false.

In our house we have a tradition of 'planting' a tree in a strategic part of the house in early December. It last about a month. Maybe the Pebble Beach Corporation could sorta do the same thing so they are there for the clam bake, but out shortly afterwards/ Like the bleachers.
The one time I played there, about 35-40 years ago I drove into the bunker short of the trees, which became a double hazard. I am prone to dislike them.

I'm pleased to have provided some stability and predictability to the good Tom Huckaby's life.

But I've never been able to get through to him on the horrible golf architecture that is Stupid Trees.

The 17th at Cypress and the 18th at Pebble - two heinous examples and he loves them both!!!

Alas.
