Seth,

I just got back from an EPIC trip to Bandon last night.  We played Pac Dunes 2x, Bandon Dunes 1x, Bandon Trails 1x, and.... a 10 holer ;D  with a couple of board members (Joe, REALLY great meeting you thanks for your help out there).

We played the back/black tees on all courses, I'm an 8 on my course, which I now realize is an easy test of play, and had a blast from back there.  I went par-free until the second day but through the week had a couple birds, a bunch of pars, and even some big double digit numbers and never had more fun doing it.  Depending on the psyche of the group, a higher handicapper may really struggle from back there possibly to the point of not enjoying it.  I wasn't at all concerned by my score, just finding a way to get it in the hole.  The weather was a perfect mix of 30-40mph winds, to no wind, to rain, to torrential rain, to hail, to sun, then cloud, a bit more rain, more wind, then sun, a bit of rain.  Then we moved onto the 3rd hole.   :)

Have fun, Bandon is a yearly must in my calendar now!

B.

I play with some low to mid handicappers from time to time around here  and when I move to the front,  there is much bitching and moaning. I offer them an incentive. Shoot par off the forward tees and I'll never say another word about the backs.

I have yet to lose the bet.

What if they shoot par on the back 9, Bob? :)

We talked about Bandon last night, 12 of us planning a trip, one brought up that there was nothing to do on the evening, he wants to go to Myrtle beach, the price came up, three others seemed in favour of Myrtle Beach. Also very hard to get too from the UK with a long treck from the airport.

Not that Bandon isn't worth the trip but would a group from the UK want to travel all that way to have a somewhat UK-like golf experience (seaside links style, cold, windy, rainy... ) ?

They might be forgiven for wanting something at least _warmer_  :D

Tom Y - us Toms think alike - that was my thought also reading this - why in God's name would any group from the UK travel that far, and that painfully, to get a faux experience of what they likely have right outside their back door?  The courses are great, for sure... but man that's a long way to go....

I have always half wanted to go to Bandon, but thought much like yourselves.  For me, Old Mac is swinging the picture round to wanting to really visit Bandon.  It is my impression that this course will be that good and to a degree unique.

That would appear to be true and may indeed tip the scale.  Still it's a LONG way to go and a LOT of money to spend....

I played with Brad. Keeping score (but still giving myself some putts) I had rounds of 94, 92, 88, and 87 respectively in tough conditions.

This was playing off a 7 currently, although i've been down as low as a 4 in the last year.

95% of golfers wouldn't finish a round at bandon in tough conditions if they had to play under the Rules.

Last year we played in a group similar to yours, and had a blast from the greens. There's no ego about tees when it's blowing 40 mph into your face and you're hitting driver on a 150 yard par 3.

You can be sure that when/if I do go it will go in a shoulder season and in lieu of another trip!

Note though that on Trails the green tees have a higher slope than the far back black tees. One of the few courses I have seen that.

That seems real strange to me.  Is the CR a whole lot higher from the backs?  Would like to see the exact numbers on both sets of tees.

Far back Black Tees course rating is 73.4 and slope 130 at 6765 yards. Green tees 70.9, 135 and 6260.

Seth - Mark is right. Don't let the yardages fool you. The wind, etc has a big effect at Bandon and the green tees work out just fine for anyone with an index from the 7's to low 20's.

Adrian - As for cost of Bandon, I think the best trio of courses you can find and when you compare the level of golf for the price it is a no brainer. Try the same trip to Pebble. You will spend at least twice as much. No comparison to Myrtle Beach. Go to Bandon. You will not be sorry.

That means bogey rating from the black tees is 97.56.  From the green tees it's 96.  The raters think bogey golfers will shoot about 1.5 strokes higher from the black tees.  They think scratch will shoot 2.5 strokes higher.

Does that make sense to those of you who know the course?  i.e. that scratch golfers see their score go up 2.5 strokes from the back tees...while bogey golfers only go up 1.5 strokes from those tees?

Less hazards come into play for the bogey golfer from the back tee but the difference in yardage you would think on its own would increase the score for the bogey golfer at least a few strokes. A very interesting rating and slope situation to say the least. Can't remember another course where I have seen this.

Guys,

This was the original course rating.  BT has since been rerated, and while I cannot recall the exact numbers the slope rating is now higher from the Blacks.

That makes sense, especially after hearing almost everyone in this thread warn the mid-cappers to stay away from the blacks.
