targets to line up on
« on: February 12, 2009, 04:33:16 PM »
I was playing Raven's Claw (Ed Shearon) in the Philly burbs yesterday with Kyle Harris.  I'm wondering about other photos out there from courses where it isn't too hard telling a newcomer what to line up on!

Those are the two cooling towers a short distance away at the Limerick nuclear power plant.  What other photos are out there with a rather unique object in the distance that makes lining up easy?

Well, Thanksgiving Point has some windmills you could line up on, though they are only very prominent on a par 3, so no real help there.

South Mountain out in Utah as well had one or two holes where Kalen told me to aim at the spire on the Draper LDS Temple, which made for a good landmark.

But I can't think of anything in NC that is obvious to aim for, but is not natural. I mean, obviously, you tell someone to aim between the hills on the 1st tee at Tobacco Road. But I can't think of any other courses that have anything major like that. (Though I must admit, I generally don't pay attention to stuff in the distance unless its really obvious, like the nuclear cooling towers)

One aims at the "o" in Hotel when playing the Road Hole, right?

I just discovered a new aiming point on the 15th hole at my club.  It seems a new sign has been erected this winter on the mall across the street from our club, so now one can simply aim at the first "o" in Nordstroms.

Doug,

Will that "o" be visible when the leaves are back?

JKM,

Yes thats true I forgot about that.  And certainly with all the mountains in the area its not tough to use the various mountain peaks as aiming points either.   ;D

Yeah, but on the two we have played, the mountains do not come into play as much. South Mountain is blasted off the side of the mountain, so its hard to aim for any peaks there. And TP has many holes that play mostly to the western side of the valley, so the biggest and most prominent peaks are not seen, other than Mt. Timpanogos and that is mostly in view on the par 3. But I am sure on a lot of the courses, the mountains can work very well.

Not sure Seth, though it's a pretty visible (and ugly) sign right now...

Those Limerick stacks are eerie when you're driving up 422 around sundown in the summertime ... I think it's around Oaks or just beyond ... you suddenly get blinded in the eyes by the sun coming up that hill, and the silhouette of those two stacks pumping out steam is like a vision out of the Apocalypse.

i remember the muni at hains point in d.c. had a hole that you lined your tee shot up on the washington monument.  not a great course, but a memorable shot.

also, don't people at wilshire c.c. in l.a. line up the ninth tee shot on the el royale apartments sign?  isn't that where the famous ben hogan "what letter?" story comes from?

On a local nine hole course, I used to line up my shot on the second hole with my old history teacher's classroom window...the high school was right next door.

What an utterly charming line, Mark. And what a lovely image. Thanks for posting that.

The Old Course has full of targets...

on a blind shot on the back nine... you walk forward and say: OK I'm going to line up on that church over there... next thing you know, you walk back to your ball, aim at the church, hit your ball right on line...

but

you were aiming at the wrong church... you look closer and you see 5-7 churches close to the line of play

At Furry Creek there is either a target or arrow painted on a cliffside to serve as a target.

Off the par 4 16th tee at Wintonbury Hills, the best line is at the historic Heublein Tower, located off in the distance on top of Avon Mountain. A Connecticut food/beverage magnate built it as his summer retreat back in 1914, and it's now a charming local hiking destination.
