I spent some time with Tom Paul and Kyle Harris today discussing in the field our differences about some new bunkers at Rolling Green. It was fascinating to try to bring the discussions we usually have online to real world evaluations not constrained by visualization issues.

I think gcaers should do this more often. We ended up trying to arrive at practical solutions to our differeing views. I doubt that can be done online.

While I still can't understand why such lovers of classic design would put up with changes that so mangle the playability intended for the hole , I thought that our attempts to find ways to recover some of the playability while living with the reality of what has been done made the day worthwhile.

Yes but Mike I did one of the stupidest things I've ever done on a golf course, yesterday.  It was observed by someone who posts on here.   I just though I should mention it to the world before he does. ;)
Let's make GCA grate again!

Mike:

It is way better in the outdoors.

Not to mention, that's the only time I get paid for my thoughts.

It was much easier to call Tom an idiot to his face and just keep on working on the analysis of the work. If I said most of the things I said to him today on this site I would be banned ! If Kyle were as esteemed on this site as Tom is I would have abused him as well.

Tom Paul is esteamed? Esteamed over what? What you said to him?

You hit on one of the few negatives to this site, and the internet at large - it is really difficult to get down and dirty without being able to look the other person in the eye. You can't see body language, you can't understand tone as effectively, etc, etc.

I got in a big argument on this site with Pat Mucci about 5 years ago, over Torrey Pines greens. Pat is one of the posters on here I respect most. We were fortunate enough to meet face to face at the Baltusrol get together - someone had posited in the thread in question that the meeting might get ugly. When I approached Pat, he had a huge smile on his face and we cleared the air in about 2 seconds.

That's why I encourage everyone who has not done so to meet other posters - go to official GCA events, unofficial, take people up on gracious invitations, do everything you can to meet someone, anyone, everyone. Have a beer and get both friendly and argumentative!
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

If we had only done this online then I would not have witnessed the precious sight of Tom Paul stepping into that brand new bunker with its new and very wet sand. As he took his foot out to step again he left his pretty little green rubber shoe in the sand. He then began to dance around on one  leg trying to pull the shoe out without getting his sock wet. I was rooting for him, but, alas, he failed!

Mike:

In my opinion, there is no comparison at all---absolutely none, particularly with people who have never even seen a golf course. Discussing things on here compared to on the ground will never come remotely close. And that very much includes new construction architecture too.

By the way, Malone, me sinking my shoe into that water-logged bunker is all your fault and you'll be billed for a new pair of Muck Boots. I've been looking for a blue pair like Wayne's but I've never been able to find them so I might have to go with green again.

I got your phone message and I'll call you today.

PS:
You'll be billed for one half the price of a new pair of socks too.

By the way, Malone, it's a lucky thing some of those suggestions we were discussing out there around those bunkers were good and interesting ones and kept our attention throughout. Had it not been that way, I'm pretty sure I would've tried to take you and stick your head in that water logged bunker once both me and my shoe found out how water-logged it really was!

Just remember, Mayday, there is usually not just one way to solve something; and thank you for getting us out there. I think it was very good, interesting and productive. But the next question is----who's going to listen to us?  ;)
