San Fran/Monterey - March 6 - 7th.
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:17:32 PM »
I'm going to be in the Bay area for a business trip and my schedule will be wide open on March 6 -7th. (Friday and Saturday) A close friend and I plan to play 2 or 3 rounds in the area that weekend. The only course we will definitely be playing is Pasatiempo. (Finally!) We were thinking Saturday for Pasa but who knows.

I've never played in the Bay area so I'm really excited about this weekend. If anyone is interested in joining us for a round, we'd love some company.

We are planning to play one or two of these courses along with Pasa:

Stevinson Ranch
Harding Park

Pacific Grove
Poppy Hills

If I should consider any other courses instead, feel free to recommend. Not sure if we'll pony up the big bucks for Pebble/Spyglass just yet.

Brian, it is a LONG way from Pasatiempo to Stevinson Ranch.  Check out Pajaro Valley, just south of Santa Cruz, it's a very good affordable course highly regarded by GCA.com members.

Bill,

Thanks for the recommendation. Pajaro makes a lot more sense and it sounds like a great place to place. If we include Pajaro and Pacific Grove, there may be some money left for Pebble after all.

This looks more like the trip now:

Friday AM - Pebble Beach
Friday Pm - Pacific Grove (maybe just the back 9 if time is tight)
Saturday AM - Pajaro Valley
Saturday PM - Pasa

What's with all the P's?

Stan,

As soon as the plans firm up, I'll get in touch.

Brian:
Concur with Bill.  Pajaro Valley is an outstanding course with great greens. We played there last year during the Kings Putter.
Best

Kind of hard to do "just the back 9" in the middle of the afternoon ...

I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe we'll have to reverse the order there. Plus we're flying in from Indiana so I won't have played golf for several months anyway. It would be nice to get a round in before Pebble.

Brian - a Friday at PG Muni should be relatively light in terms of crowds, but Stan Dodd can comment.  I know I have done an early morning round there and played very quickly, which is nice.  In any case, taking Stan up on his offer would be the wisest move you make... our friend there is a great guy, fine player, very fun playing partner in all respects.  He'll also know for sure when best to play!

One other note - have you made teetimes yet?  Too early for most... but best not to screw around with this.  Sat Mar 7 in particular should be a quite popular golf day.

Note also that general public can only play Pasa after a certain time in the am, as you seem to have gleaned given the plan to do that pm. But Pajaro isn't exactly vacant on a Saturday morning also.. plan accordingly.

I'd be interested in seeing Pajaro, if you need to fill out your foursome. Im me if you desire such...

I hope the weather gods are kind during your stay. ;)

I didn't think it ever rained there??

A little chilly maybe, but something other than a blue sky in Monterey?!?

We say this to keep the tourists away.  BTW do not watch TV this weekend.

Tom really wasn't joking.  If the forecast holds, it looks like this will be a 36 hole deal at best.  Monday included just so there weren't any fantasies about fitting in 36 on that day either.

Not sure where you live, but where I am we only have one month all year that averages less rain than 3.5 inches.  3.5 is Yikes by Monterey standards, but it isn't exactly doom and gloom!  I think the odds are still in your favor that golf won't be rained out on any given day.

Good luck and enjoy!

I really just based that on the fact that it's the 3rd rainiest month of the year in Monterey. It looked bad but I guess that's just a testament to the great weather on MP. They average a TOTAL of .9" of rain from May to August.

The two courses at Fort Ord were recently renovated to the tune of multi millions and may be worth a look. The Bayonet has always been a favorite.

er, um, have you seen the courses since the renovation?

Tough but fair, and completely soul-less.

Also horrifically overpriced.

The Bayonet always WAS a favorite of mine, too.  Now?  No way.

But this has been discussed in other threads for sure.

I would not recommend Bayonet these days unless money is absolutely no object, and anything outside of a fair test is any sort of goal.
