Private clubs in Scottsdale area?

My brother is moving to Scottsdale and is interested in joining a private club.  He's not serious enough a player for Whisper Rock but I'd appreciate suggestions of quality places to check out.

How deep are his pockets? Most of the private clubs in Scottsdale have a residential component although some have recently opened membership to non homeowners- Mirabel and Troon, for example. Desert Forest, profiled here under Courses By Country, is a top quality golf only club.

Golf Club of Scottsdale - not sure about costs but it has a pretty solid golf course with one slightly goofy area, caddies available, great practice area, and a really cool clubhouse.

Arizona Country Club although it is actually in Phoenix near Camelback.  Depending on his age they have a great deal for someone under 40.

Desert Forest is the only real traditional golf club in the area. And probably the best course in terms of landforms, strategy and driving the ball. Plus the split level, step-down bar is really, really cool.

He's going to have to put in some face time and get an invite to the Rock, which isn't an easy process. Best deals in the Valley have already been mentioned i.e. Desert Forest, Golf Club Scottsdale, Phoenix CC & Arizona CC. Both Desert Forest & Golf Club Scottsdale are VERY affordable depending on your age. However, if he's looking for a "cheap" private club in N. Scottsdale/Phoenix, Tatum Ranch is right around $7500 to join, decent enough tract (though Doak wasn't too impressed)... GREAT finishing 4 holes, nice bar, restaurant, etc... HP at Tatum carries the ball right around 350... Happy to report that his name is Tony as well  ;)

Several clubs in the Scottsdale are hurting big time and will probably go under.  Mirabel is definitey on the ropes and I'll bet Quintero is having it's share of problems.  You might even be able to make a deal at some of the privates to just pay monthlies.

Hey Wayno...what happened to the 'd' in your last name?

About a month ago, we played Encanterra, which lies to the Northwest, I believe,
Excellent playing course with little scenery and plenty of home sites.

As of December, management told us they had a total of 24 members, the prices were cheap, just above or below the 30K range.

I might add that Mirabel is one version of heaven on earth.

Encanterra is a quality course located in the SE part of the Valley. It's quite a distance from Scottsdale and even with the 202 it must be at least 45 minutes from Scottsdale. It's not even located in Maricopa County.

Quintero is another quality course and is located in the middle of nowhere on the road to Wickenburg west of Scottsdale. It's at least 45 minutes from North Scottsdale.

Blackstone in Peoria in the West Valley is offering a 3 year trial membership.

No real estate is required at either of these clubs.

I played at both clubs last winter.

I would tell him to definitely check out The Arizona Country Club.  I have had the pleasure of working with the club now for a little over a year and have really enjoyed my time with them.  It may be one of the few clubs in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area that feels like a golf club and not an extension of a resort (even though they have a new world class clubhouse with all the amenities).  It's the type of club you could hang-out at and just be one of the guys - great equality.  They have a very high percentage of better players - probably only second to Whisper Rock.  Great staff with The Head Professional having come out of Bob Ford's at Oakmont and one of the better teaching pros in the Valley.
