5 courses ranked ahead of Cypress?? Say it ain't so.

It's pretty funny to think that the other ranking panels generally have Cypress in the top 5 overall - yet somehow it doesn't make the top 5 Ocean Courses for Golf Channel (note: no The! ).

TGC is the Palmer channel...in which Tiger is the leading star.  He deserves the attention, and TGC does a fine job of staying in his good graces.

They sure do.  Ranking his course that hasn't even been built yet as a runner-up to the top ten!

What a joke!

Hmmmmm.....
aren't most here ready to call Old Macdonald top whatever in the world, based on seeing 10 holes and/or some pictures?

The inclusion of Tiger's course seems to me to be the least offensive part of this.  Beyond that, what the hell, it's a puff piece.  I'd be worried if they DID have some worthwhile rankings/inclusions.

Has anyone on here made any claim as to OM's ranking? I have seen a lot of people excited, but don't recall anyone mentioning a ranking.

Perhaps you are merely engaging in a bit of hyperbole... akin to ranking Pebble ahead of Oakmont. :)

David,

I purposely made that statement about Tiger being the "best ever" to get a rise out of people.    ;D  I'm surprised more people didn't object, in the same manner in which you did.

I realize completely we can't compare golfers throughout time, and the argument works especially well if you are a Nicklaus fan.

Fishers Island is the most notable omission for me.  However, you can't fit 10 courses on one list.  Is Teeth of the Dog better than Old Head or Tralee?  Probably.  But Old Head has those spectacular cliffs and peninsular location that make it unique in the golf world.  Tralee has the castles and the movie set beach.  It was probably a fun show to watch, even if it didn't demonstrate the highest knowledge of golf course architecture.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Top Ten shows on Golf Channel, if for no other reason than the fact that I can argue with yet another golf-related list.

In ten years, I bet a course from Nevada makes that list......or at least eastern California!

Not the best list, with Postmarnock making it.

I was excited to watch, then it got weak....

How can this list not have Cape Kidnappers on it?

Portmarnock didn't make it.

What didn't you like about Portmarnock ? May not be top 10 but I would argue it isn't far outside of it.

Kidnappers isn't going to make this sort of a list because people making the show would not have played it...

Actually, I agree Tiger IS the best.  Though of course it's only opinion.

Turnberry was #3 and TOC was #2. How CPC wasn't #1 is beyond me.

Mike-

One of the guys on the show mentioned that he was amazed the Ryder Cup hasn't gone back to the TOC. Why hasn't it and is that a goal of Kiawah to get it back out there after the 2012 PGA?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the players really whining about the Ocean Course after the Ryder Cup in 1991?  I thought they were saying it was just too difficult, unfair, and practically unplayable set up the way it was in those conditions (i.e. the debacle on #17).  It didn't seem like they had much experience to work off as far as set-up and severity b/c, correct me if I'm wrong, the course was opened very shortly before the tournament.

I know the course has been softened quite a bit since then, which would probably help get the Cup back (or another PGA/LPGA event).  Were bridges burned (from a playability aspect) between the players/PGA and the course in 1991 which could explain why there hasn't been much at the course since (except the Senior PGA)?

Mike -

I loved Kiawah, but if you had to choose Cypress Point or The Ocean Course to play for the rest of your life, which would you choose? I would drop everything to go play Cypress Point again.

From my understanding, the PGA has never returned to a Ryder Cup site.  However, I was speaking to my boss the other day (a former PGA President) and he said that we would happily welcome it back to The Ocean Course.  The problem is, the next available date in the U.S. is 2024.  YIKES!
