Based in Scotland, I can't wait to see Machrihanish Dunes opened this year as well as Castle Stuart.
What are you looking forward to seeing in play this year?

More out of curiosity than anything else, the courses being designed by Tiger Woods. I look forward to seeing what kind of product he can deliver.

I would say Barnbougle Dunes 2, Old Macdonald, the Tiger course in Mexico, and maybe the new Chicago Hieghts course west of the city (only because new courses have been so rare around here in the past 10 years).

Not that I don't know the likely answer to this question...but:

Anything new opening in New England this year?

Last year we had Butter Brook and Old Marsh, among maybe a couple others.

I think the Penobscot Valley reno/resto is opening this year...

Hey, those are some good pictures of Common Ground.

This is one where I don't think they will spoil it by showing every hole.  It's not the kind of property where there is a jaw-dropping view just around the next corner ... the course will appeal because of the smaller-scale details of the bunkering and because of how the holes play, which won't show up that well in pictures, anyway.

Does the 10th green fall away front to back? 

How similar was the design process of CG w/the Rawls course?  Both seem to be essentially 'blank canvases' to design what you want (or can) on a core, contiguous, and (mostly) flat ground.

Common Ground is nothing at all like The Rawls Course.  The budget was 1/2 as much ... the only earthmoving we did was a requirement to remove some soil from the bottom end of the course and put it around the edges, to increase the flood control capacity of the site.  (You can't see it in the pictures but there is a large flood control dyke along one side of the course.)

At The Rawls we spent a lot of $ on the landscaping to hide the surrounding properties.  At Common Ground we spent very little on this aside from the required earthmoving and moving a few trees around.  We did re-route the course to take what advantage we could of the natural contours and the trees that had been planted over the years ... but mostly the design is about the greens and the small bunkers.

And yes, the 10th green does fall away from the line of play ... as does the 1st and parts of a couple others.

In this economic environment, I'm looking forward to any course being opened.   :o

From the perspective of something near and dear to my heart, which is reasonably priced architecturally interesting golf, CommonGround is the course I'm most anticipating seeing.

I looked at the routing this morning before seeing the photos and agree that 16-18 should be a very strong finish. Also holes 4-8 look really good.

Question for Tom Doak--the description of #18 says there's a "pine tree planted in the middle of the fairway in front of the green."  What's up with that?

The interest is indeed building around here regarding this course...
