Palm Springs Recommendations
« on: January 07, 2009, 01:58:28 PM »
My father and a couple of his buddies are heading to Palm Springs in a few weeks and are curios about which courses they should play. They aren't going to bother accessing private clubs, so just a list of your top publics would be greatly appreciated. Knowing my father he won't want to spend a ton of money for golf, so price is a little bit of a concern. I know nothing about the area so any help to steer my father in the right direction would be great. Thanks for the help.

Desert Dunes on the far west end of Palm Springs is a good solid RTJII course.

Now if the wind is up (see adjacent wind farm  ;) ) it can pretty darn challenging!

don't play TPC-Norman, it was the scene of a huge bashing by some of us, including Tommy and John VB, about 10 years ago.  La Quinta-Mountain might be too expensive but is a terrific course.

The Mountain Course at LaQuinta looks pricey, even on golfnow.

Here's their complete list of courses:

I agree with Bill on Desert Dunes, for the money that is the best value by far.

Other one that is fun to play which isnt to bad on price is

Desert Falls- some pretty wild greens that make the course fun

Two of my favorites are Terra Lago north and south (formerly Landmark). They are also two of the more reasonably priced courses in the desert and formerly held the Skins Game!!!

Kyle,

I noticed Faldo's Shadow Ridge on the 'golfnow' list.  It is a very solid track, great bunkering and for $95 this time of year I would consider it a great value.

If you are in or around Palm Desert be sure to keep the following two (2) courses in mind ...

1). Marriott's Shadow Ridge

2). Desert Willow (be sure to play Firecliff)

They are both reasonably priced and easy to access from most point in the greater vallet area.

The issue I have w Desert Dunes is that it makes Chicago look calm on a stormy day -- the w-i-n-d is mega strong and you need to be advised that 5 club wind is not unheard of when playing there.

Agree with Bill, Desert Dunes is one of my favorites in the valley. If they haven't seen PGA West Stadium, they should. Also, just 30 mins from Palm Springs is Curley and Schmidt's Oak Valley, a solid course. It's in Beaumont.

I forgot about Marriot Shadowridge if that is still in your price range I would play that one first.

Desert Willow supposedly raised their prices to 260 dollars a round which is way overpriced in my book.

It's been a few years but when Marriott's Shadow Ridge was fairly new they had a stay and play package in their condos for $169.00  A GREAT bargain.  The golf course stands on its own, however, and I wouldn't hesitate to play it again.

So does the scenic wonder of Turnberry and the haunting incredibility of Prestwick, and the pleasant deception of Troon. But put them altogether and St. Andrew's can play their low ball for atmosphere." Dan Jenkins

Nothing is really exciting there
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Kyle , Make sure to watch the wind , courses like Desert Dunes and The Classic Club north of highway 111 can blow like hell . La Quinta Mountain , The Stadium Course and Shadow Ridge are all good . Don't play Trilogy or the South Course at Tera Lago ...... it's been cut up for housing .

Firm greens, firmer fairways.

Marriots Shadow Ridge (which has a great practice facility) and Desert Willow - Firecliff are outstanding. Also Tahquitz Creek. Desert Dunes is a little of a crapshoot with the wind and I just don't think it is a very good course. Not sure where the Dunes are and the most of the par threes you play with the same iron. I little boring.

My brother owns a timeshare at Shadow Ridege so I play it a lot.

One bit of upside to our economic woes is that they've stopped timeshare construction at Shadow Ridge, so most of the course remains out of range of the housing.
