houses right of tower must just be the continuation of North Street eastwards?
the block to the right - the end gable of Abbotsford Cres maybe?

S(h)urely photo from later than the mid 1800s??? No Clubs, No Hamilton Hall, No Rusacks. Is that Old Tom's shop with the three sloping white lines (billboards?) in front?

I do not think so as OTM did not return until 1864 and I think that was before the development of his shop which was rather big in those days taken two buildings. Can't show photo because not mine.

What a busy thirty or forty years that was on The Links (the road) wasn't it!!!
Must have been a right pain trying to golf amongst all that construction work!

You haven't lived until you've gouged one out of the rough short left into the Scholars Bunker and then tried unsuccessfully to carry the Progressing Bunker in a vain effort to reach the green.

I believe the houses to the right of the tower are on Golf Lane, the others gable end ones are left on Pilmour Playfair Terrace leading up hill to the start of North Street. The last set may still be on City Road at the junction of Abbotsford Crescent in the region of Abbotsford House/McIntosh Hall.

I must admit I have never bothered to check what still may be there.

PS  Marty should be able to give you more details as I believe he can remember the construction of the early building circa 1850’s. What a memory he must have, the result  of regular consumption of a good single malt, really good for longevity.  ;
