In December 1999 Golf World published a feature on the top ten par 3s in the British Isles:

1. 12th Royal Birkdale 183 yards
2. 8th Royal Troon 126 yards
3. 15th Portmarnock 190 yards
4. 12th Woodhall Spa 172 yards
5. 7th Rye 159 yards
6. 5th Gleneagles Kings 178 yards
7. 5th Loch Lomond 190 yards
8. 15th Balybunion 216 yards
9. 18th Mahoney's Point Killarney 196 yards
10. 13th The Addington 225 yards

One or two contentious omissions?

I'm not so sure that the British are as obsessed with "The Redan" and "The Eden / High" as across the pond though... The legend of those holes started in America surely...

Presuming these are two of the holes you were thinking about?

Ally, your point may well be spot on. Nice to see Killarney still in favour and that, even in those dark times, The Addington was recognised.

The ones that immediately come to mind:

The 11th at TOC (the original Eden)

The 16th at Carnoustie

The 6th at Lachinch (the Dell)

The 14th at Royal Portrush (Calamity) -- actually the first one I thought of...

aye but #1 is spot on.....my favourite hole anywhere.

Mark - Do you know what happened to Addington (New) post WWII? I know that Abercromby lived there and that New was highly regarded at one time.

The 'New' course fell victim to the post-war pressure put on the local authorities by the Labour government to build low cost housing for the less well-off. Consequently, it was ploughed up and replaced by the notorious Shrublands council estate.

This shows the gradual encroachment of the new estate on the New course (which is north east of the road). The Old course (the 2nd and 12th greens) can just be seen in the bottom left of the image, south west of the road.

I just dont get it...what a superb course...new green on 17 as an exception...
To me it has everything...
