Has anyone played this course? I hear it has an interesting genesis.

To see it I wouldn't think it but it's only one dune--hence Twisted Dune!

I played it over Easter and it the best of the South Jersey courses that I have played, however I have not played Atlantic City CC since the Doak restoration. It gives you the feel of a "Dune" course in Ireland without a "Vegas" feeling of copycat holes. It has been mentioned a few times on GCA, and it has been rated as high as 6 and 7 on the Doak scale, and I would agree. No clubhouse at Easter, but may be open soon. However the course was in very good shape considering its lack of a second grow in season back in April. I would assume it is even better now.

A very fun course.  Lots of options off the tee and to the greens.  Be prepared for wind (lots of it!!).  The ground game is definitely in play at TD.  Sometimes it's just more fun to hit a running 5 iron from 100-120 yards than just throwing a wedge or 9 iron up into the air.  TD gives you this option.

Bob,

My short answer (I'm trying to catch up on over FIVE pages of threads here after being out of town! ;) ) is that Twisted Dune is the best public course in the state of New Jersey, and a solid 7 on the Doak Scale.

As far as its genesis, all I know is that Archie Struthers put an amazing amount of mental and physical energy into this place, and the results bear that out.

Mike:
Thanks for the information. A friend of mine here in Pebble and a member at PVGC, mentioned that the course was put together by a person, who at one time, had caddied at the the club! Sounds awfully far fetched to me but I am naive in these matters.

On their website, these dunes look rather artificial. Do they look more natural in person?

what is farfetched about a former PV caddie building and designing a first rate golf course?, AS's love of the game in its pure and proper style shines through at TD.

Brad:

My comment was not derisory. I am not saying that a caddie cannot have as much aesthetic sense as a Michelangelo and an understanding of good design. Most caddies that I know, do not have the financial wherewithall to carry out such a project.

Bob, I believe AS as many others, was working and playing his way through school and/or  young adulthood, what better way to do it than at PV and or CPC in your neighborhood. I didn't take your comment in a negative way. Wouldn't we all be better off if more people that love and respect the games traditions were involved at the ground floor.

Mike,
Twisted Dune is currently partially owned by Empire Golf . Archie, who also own and operates a private course nearby, created the course from a prior routing with his own dramatic elevations and greens. He has participated in discussions about the making of the course a few times here. Before Archie got into the real estate business he was one of famous PV loopers. He still supports walking and has created a caddy program at his course. The business of building and growing in the course may have created co-ownership, but the course and the staff are 100% Archie. It is a pleasure to play and the staff is all pro.

The initial  view of the club is something. I remember driving through a basically flat neighborhood in S. Jersey, then all
of a sudden these absolutely massive dunes come into view.

The course does not disappoint. I played about 10 months ago, and I can imagine that it has matured nicely since then.
Ii's the best public course I've played in Jersey.
