One wish granted...
« on: December 25, 2008, 04:51:06 PM »
with apologies in advance to any who have broached this topic before...

being that it's xmas, if the commissioner (from way up high) gave us one (and only one) three hole stretch to play  (real estate is limited inside the pearly gated community) what would it be?

Amen Corner, Pebble??

I thought your one wish granted would be Barney being banished.... wish granted!   ;D

For me it would be an obvious one:  16-18 at Merion East.

Nice to have you back Dave!

Yep, Amen Corner.

Although 7-9 at Pebble is a contender, as is.

And 15-17 at cypress certainly must be up there.

Amen Corder is a clear choice but I would also like to try the first 3 holes at Oakmont. I was a huge fan of this course from watching the US Open on TV.

1 - long Par 4 with a front-to-back sloping green. Cool.
2 - interesting short par 4 with a wild green. Fownes apparently would drop a ball on the back of the green and if it didnt roll all the way off the front, they would cut the green again!
3 - Par 4, Church Pews, great green site - Tiger could not get up and down from over the back.

Beaver Island State Park (north of Buffalo).  16, 17, and 18 with my dad.  He's still with us, but his playing days are long gone.

I actually didnt particularly like 14, and found 15 to be too long! I would take 2 - 4 at PV in a heartbeat.

16 - 18 at Sand Hills on summer day temps about 90, not a cloud in the sky and the wind steady & 20.

Yeah - that would be good.

Dave , My pick by a whisker is #5-7 at Crystal Downs. Easy enough to birdie by anyone but hard enough to make double if you get sloppy.

I think I might choose 5-6-7 or 7-8-9 at CPC before 15-16-17. 5-9 there is my favorite 5 hole stretch I have played.

15-17 at CPC just bacause of the looks.

But any three hole stretch with my dad and both grandfathers would probably be a lot more fun than any other stretch around.

I'll take 6-8 at Ballyneal,

2-4 at Pacific, or

10-12 at Black Mesa.

Since it's threes, I thought I would sitck with threes!

This thread has been repeated at least 376 times, so let's vector off the path and make it a thinking game. It is all well and good to cheerfully chirp how splendid to spend eternity playing #7-9 at Pebble Beach or "any three holes" at PV or NGLA.

Unless St. Peter is providing a golf cart to shuttle you back from the 9th green to 7th tee at Pebble, what idiot wants to hassle with a 1000 yard trudge up a hill steep enough to require petons?

How about three holes in a row that make sense as a "Whiskey Route?" Like #4,5 and 8 on Olympic Lake?

Or #1, 17 & 18 at NGLA?

#7, 8 & 9 at Cypress?

#14, 15 & 16 at Shinnecock?

As a matter of fact, let's not limit it to three holes. How about great Whiskey Routes that include any odd number of holes?

We have all been there. After several hours of slamming dice cups and busy bartenders, one of the local punters gets the bright idea that a three or four hole skins game is in order. Invariably this comes with an odd twist, like limiting everyone to one club.

So out the clubhouse door burst a gang-some of middle-aged adolescents in varying stages of drunk, marching down to the tee in their Topsiders and a five iron.

There my friends, is the essence and spirit of the game. It is on those holes where we can find true Heaven whether at Maidstone, Ballybunnion or Disgusta National, the affectionate name we locals give to Poplar Creek/San Mateo Muni.

If the "Commissioner" in the sky is only going to cough up three holes, then there is my wish, Pine Valley or not.

Gib -- good twist.  I miss the old Whiskey Route on the previous version of the Ocean Cse.  Just enough holes to get a bit of variety in a short amount of time, with a natural route back to the starting point.

On a twist to your twist, I like the fact that 10-13 at Tilden goes out from the clubhouse with medium length par 4 (sidehill lie to an elevated green for the second shot), a 220+ yd par 3 for the 11th, a short par 4 for the 12th and a reachable (with a good drive and receptive wind/turf conditions) par 5 for the 13th.  Some Saturday morning rounds end for me on the 13th if I have an early kid's game to get to.

Great call, Kevin.  I think it would be great if more courses returned near the clubhouse partway through the back nine like Tilden does.  A very diverse stretch of holes as well, as you pointed out.
