CPC and the Nematode Problem

I played Cypress yesterday morning in 52 degree weather and the bluest sky without a cloud in sight. There was a not a jot of wind and I have never, ever, seen the course in better condition.

The greens which had been ravaged by a nematode infestation in recent years seems to have been arrested by new fungicides.

The greens were running at speeds I have not seen since the California State Amateur of a year ago at MPCC, somewhere in the range of thirteen on the stimp.

It was a day to remember.

sounds incredible. do you know anything about the fungicide? i assume if they can use it that close to the coast then it's not too toxic?

Great news!

Hopefully this will stave off further problems with the Faziotode and Marzloffoid fungus' that were planning on attacking CPC......

Neemix/Trilogy had the best results controlling the surface nematode problem....but should be used with others to help control the sub surface population.

Multiple types of nematodes combine to do the most damage.

I looked up that Nematode guy on ghin.com and he hasn't posted scores for at least two years.  The problem must have been solved.

Bob:  If it's true that the club has found a good control mechanism for nematodes, that's great news not only for Cypress Point, but for all the courses in San Francisco and on the Monterey Peninsula.  They have all been rebuilding greens to battle this problem.

I hope it holds up, but keep in mind that nematodes are a cyclical problem ... a new generation attacks every four months, but the turf can sometimes be quite good in between.

I recently sat through a very detailed talk on nematodes and unfortunately I don't think there are any new solutions out there (or on the way).  Furthermore, the only treatment that seems to have had any positive impact is going away.  Though it is not an exact science, I wonder what the nematode counts are running out there on the greens right now?  I'm sure they are being charted.  #17 was really under duress last time I was out in June.  I'm back out in mid January and it will be interesting to see the difference and to find out why?

Mark.....read the link, its quite in depth and it seems you have an interest, but yes, they are being charted in test plots on Cypress.

The best pesticide for controlling Nematodes was a product called "Nemacure" that the EPA recently took off the market.
If you were smart enough to plan in advance you could lay in a supply of the stuff and they can't take it away otherwise no more is available.

Might you have any new information to share?

Do you know if there are multiple efforts being made
or is all work being handled through Mr Mahady?
