I just watched all 4 of these plus Scott's.....and no one mentioned the  the main man, Slim Spurling......

Some wonderful insights from Ron. I love his relaxed demeanor and I'm sure the surface was not even scratched that evening on what Ron or Scott can share with us. Damn, I wish I could've been there! :'(

Thanks Mike. I watched one from Scott, one from Ron, and will definitely get to the remainder.

I really liked Ron's take on 'playability', it reminded me of something that George Bahto told me some years ago.
I wonder what Pittsburgh's Puba of Playability will think?  ;D

Ahhh - The power of video. There are a number of talented wordsmiths on GCA (whom i enjoy to read) but seeing someone speak the words makes a great difference. If there is a way to grow golf (and understanding architecture) it is surely NOT thru words alone.

Yes, I have some Gil video as well.  But that the audio is very poor and I'm trying to rectify it.  Stay tuned.

It's a treat.

I've enjoyed listening to Ron and have learned a great deal from him.

I thought I saw a resemblance from the photo on Slim's website   www.sllmspurling.com.....another participant sent me a life ring from Slim a couple of years ago after Scott had explained it to me......I still keep it in my pocket....

I can tell you Scott Anderson definitely does not hesitate to mention Slim Spurling and how central he was to his (Scott's) education.

Awesome and I've only seen the first two.

I'd argue that just like the Merion Newspaper piece today on the WC, it is important to continually scratch the surface. Otherwise newcomers have little opportunity to learn some history and fundamentals.

Topics which deserve their thread;

The terminology issue;
 Reno Resto; What's the union called?
 The dreaded RR and shot values.
 Playability; Subjective context

Late in the second reel, Ron appears to contradict himself when mentioning the mainstream designers work and how often he sees their work. In my reading between the lines, what he meant was that he had stopped seeking out their work because it was so evident they had "not gone to school" Is that a fair interpretation?

 I'll finish watching now and shut up if this was just meant to be a lovefest.

I'm sorry too you couldn't be there but that would've been a long way for you to come just for that. Had you been able to make it, though, you would've had a speech on UTube on GCA too.  ;)

Not sure what the subject might've been but perhaps I could've given you the subject that other guy you remind me so much of, Jim Nagle of the Hanse Co., has prominently on his mind right now. That would be how to really piss off Tour pro types via golf course architecture!  :-*
