Wolf Run Golf Club IN

Does anyone happen to have more photos of this course other than the two in the course profile.  This was by far my favorite track in Indiana when I lived there.  I want to show my friend some photos in case he is in the area for the 2009 US Senior Open at Crooked Stick.

I e-mailed you some photos--they were too big to attach here without going through the photobucket effort. If anyone else wants to see them I'm happy to forward the e-mail.

Wolf Run is my favorite course in Indiana, although I haven't played Victoria National. Wolf Run is in my top ten, so it would do well just about anywhere else too.

Thank you everyone.  I appreciate it very much.  Yes, this course is very underrated IMO.  When your finished playing a round there, you can visually go through every hole in your head with no problem at all.  Every hole has a distinct trait to them.  Also, like Nike Faldo said the 12 through 16 stretch is about as good as it gets.

I had a photo thread at this time last year.  I ran out of good light on 17 and 18, but the first 16 holes are fairly well displayed.  There is a true redan that can be seen in the pictures.

A wonderful course.  I too prefer it to Crooked Stick.  I've played with a WR member (not there) who logged over 300 rounds on his course in one year.  As I recall, the initiation fee was very reasonable, under $20,000? and the monthly dues were in line.  Is there a better value for a top private course in the country?

I agree Lou, if you live in the area there isn't a better deal.  I lived in Carmel for 15 years, and Wolf Run is by far the most fun course to play.  You don't feel like you are in Indiana when you are playing.  If I were to belong to one club in the area it would be Wolf Run, it is never busy and super exclusive.  If you are one of the guys that likes to impress your buddies by bringing them out to your tough member course this is your ticket.  You always want to come back because you feel like you can do better than the miserable score you posted your last time out.

Even better than being a local member is being a national member.....you get the excuse to stay in the lodge!  Waking up 50 yards away from the 1st tee with the fog rolling out never gets old. 

I took a bunch of pictures the last time I visited, if I can figure out how to post them, I will.

Great Photos.  Really fine looking golf course.

It is great to see a modern golf course with a short par three.  #16 is 130 from the back tees and downhill.

From "elite golfcourses.com": Elevated tees affect club selection. Small (~15yd diameter), oval green releases balls left off the right 20% of green. Short/right portion of green releases balls forward and left. Pot bunkers in rear are small and offer high degree of difficulty.

Clint those photos look fantastic!  With all the fall color and the ruff grown every picture looks perfect.  My uncle who is the superintendent at Woodland Country Club down in Carmel is good friends with the superintendent Joe Kosoglov at Wolf Run.  It looks like Joe hasn’t lost his touch; he has this course in perfect condition from when it opens in March to close in October.

Clint, the pics are great. I am the person Lou mentioned in his post. While I haven't posted 300 rounds at Wolf in one year, easily  I get 200 rounds or more. and according to the owners I have more rounds posted at WRGC than any member in history. I have been a member for almost 10 years and probably have 2000 rounds there and still find nuances and shots that I have never had before. From some of the pics I would say those were from this fall, because of some of the maintenance I saw being done. They warmed my heart as I sit in here in SW Florida playing courses that have no where near the character that WRGC does. I am suppose to tee it up this Saturday with Steve Smyers in the Lakeland area Saturday morning. It is a shame you couldn't post a narrative with each shot which would only add to the great pics. Thanks for a great finish to my day, I'll have to have another vodka.  Of course this time of year SW Fl in 80 degree weather, beats Zionsville, IN with 10 degrees and ice and snow.

Bob, I figured you were who Lou mentioned.  These are from this fall, about a month after Greg and I saw you there.  The trees were turning some really great colors, the pics don't do them justice.  Really glad I had my camera with me. 

A narrative is a good idea....maybe a weekend project for me.  Have fun in Florida, it's awful here in Chicago.

Clint, appreciate the pics, let me know when you are coming down again. Late May and June are when the course plays the hardest with the thick bluegrass rough.  It truly changes characters from month to month. See you next season, and I need to get back to Chicago next summer.

Wolf Run and Victoria National are perhaps the two best courses in the state and I have seen neither of them.  But in 2009, watch out.

From what I have seen and heard in Indiana you have the top 4 privates; Wolf Run, Victoria, Crooked Stick and Sycamore Hills in various orders depending on who you talk to.  Then everything falls in line behind them.  Trophy Club might be the best public course in the state, but it is clearly a step or two behind those top tier private courses.

I have played both Wolf Run and Trophy Club on multiple occasions.  Once I did Trophy Club in the morning and then an afternoon round at Wolf Run.  Though trophy club is a great track and has some very interesting golf holes, Wolf Run is just on another level.  If I had to break it up between 10 rounds it would be 9 at Wolf Run and 1 at Trophy Club just for some variation.  Wolf Run is that good, I now live in California and have played some pretty top tier courses out here and still think in my head how Wolf Run ranks up with them all.

I agree with all this with one caveat. South Bend CC is as good or better than Sycamore Hills and not that far behind Crooked Stick. Its a great old gem that gets no credit--I'm not sure anyone there really cares but there aren't many places I'd rather play regularly.

Wolf Run is in a league of its own aside perhaps from Victoria National which I haven't seen. The public courses, while great in their own right, aren't even close. Wolf Run is better than 70% of the top 100 level courses I've seen and is comfortably in my top ten.

Can you tell us which California courses you are thinking of? 

I like the pictures.  Only one hole jars my senses a bit: the par 3 with all those bunkers scattered across the side of the hill.  How does that hole play?

Good point about South Bend CC.  I haven't seen that one either, but it just doesn't seem to get the love from the raters as the others.  It wouldn't shock me if it was above Sycamore Hills.  I haven't seen SH in years, and I wasn't that impressed for all the hype it gets on my one visit back when.
