Mt. Rainier GC (Historical)
« on: December 05, 2008, 08:31:31 PM »
I was watching a show on HDNet called Rainer: The Mountain.  The show was telling the history of the last 150 years of the beautiful Washington State mountain.

During the show, mention was made of an old "golf course" that was on the mountain.  Apparently, you'd play your way down the volcano and take a bus back up.  It was a 9-hole course that operated for "a few years".  They incuded a photo of a guy teeing with a wood with the moutain in the background.

I lived in Portland, OR for 9 years, and this was the first time I've ever heard of anything resembling golf on the mountain.  By the looks of the picture on the TV show, it was probably played over scrub  - it sure didn't look grassy.

Does anybody have any info on it?  (I didn't find anything with a few quick Google searches).

Thanks!

Dan, I wish that I knew something about it.  I have always been in awe of Mt Rainier and think that would be a great place for a course, especially one bearing it's name.

Dan,
I think this is a photo of the building that acted as a clubhouse.

The only thing I found said the course, and other commercial ventures, ended in the early '70s, with little traces of any activity left. The course was only usable for 2 months of the year.

Dan, Last year, I was fortunate to experience Mt. Ranier (Mt. Tahoma) everyday for three months. I feel it along with Mt. Hood are the prettiest mountains in the world. Spectacular would be a better word. The one shame about Chambers Bay is due to its sidehill nature, one is not afforded a view of this mountain, which seriously appears most anywhere you look. However there are other courses that do steal its beauty; courses like Fircrest and Oakbrook. It's almost as if these courses are blessed.

Tommy,
Amen to the beauty of the NW mountains!  In Portland, Mt Hood is a sentinal that somehow makes you feel good.   The golf at Welches Resort has some amazing close-up views of Mt Hood.  I seem to remember Oswego Lake having some great views too.
