Top 100 Nominations (Closed)
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:31:13 AM »
Nominations closed.

Let me stress right away that this is NOT an official GCA.com activity, nor is it endorsed in anyway by GCA.com .  Ran has graciously allowed this activity to take place on his forum.

In case you missed it, I conducted a survey a couple weeks ago asking GCAers to rank the GOLF Magazine Top 100 on the Doak Scale, to get a sense of how they stack up for GCA.com members (see http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,37531.0.html ).  Several people have shown interest in creating a larger ballot so that great courses outside the GOLF Magazine Top 100 could have a chance at being ranked (by a similar method that was used in the previous activity).  So, with the help of Tom D and others I have compiled a list of 389 courses taken from various lists, including Golfweek, Golf World, and the GOLF Magazine outside the US ballot.  All 389 courses are listed here in alphabetical order.

If you think there is a course not on the list that deserves a chance at the top 100, please nominate it here.  Once nominated, another GCAer may second that nomination, which will result in the course being added to the ballot.  No courses will be taken off the ballot.  Let me make clear that you should only nominate a course if you think it could legitimately be considered as a top 100 course. Do not nominate a course simply because you think it's better than some courses on this list.  There are many courses here that have little to no chance of making the top 100 but are included for the sake completeness. We will only be displaying the top 150 courses or so, not all 400+.

Listed first is the course list.  Below are courses that have qualified for the list.  Finally, there are courses that have been nominated, and will be added once requested by another GCA member.

Thats a fairly exhaustive list!  Just the same, I have to nominate three more.  None will probably go anywhere because I myself am not sure if they are top 100 in the world.  I am throwing these out because I think they are better than several dozen listed.

Enniscrone
Pennard (has J Finegan ever been wrong?)
Portstewart

Silloth on Solway is superior to many of these, so I nominate it.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Ian,

What are you going to name your list.  Considering a large number of frequent posters on this site have no interest in participating is it possible to tweak the name a bit so all of us do not have to be associated with a ranking system we may not believe in?  Something like...The Linford  and Friends List of Greatest Courses.

Tobacco Road
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

JK....why post in a thread on a subject you have no interest in participating in?  No one is associating anything with each and every member of the board...just saying...

I will nominate Four Mile Ranch, which is really cool despite being doubtful to make a world top 100...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Because to call this list a GCA.com top 100 is a farce if every member does not participate.  Since we are so tied into the Golf Magazine top 100 which lists its contributors I simply request that we follow its model of publishing the names of the raters.  I do not see the value in this list for any reader familiar with this site if they do not know if such posters as TEPaul, Pat Mucci, Tom Doak, Ran, Jay Flemma, Tommy, Huck, Bahto, Gib, Klein, Matt Ward, Mike, Young, Tom Lehman, Geoff and Lynn Shackelford, Gill Hanse, Ron Prichard, Brauer, Turboe, Franklin, Nuzzo, etc., etc.

If anyone is offended because I left them off of this esteemed list please note that it was most likely intentional because you have consistently posted either boring or meaningless opinions.

Blah, blah, blah.... I'm up for anything that stimulates discussion of golf courses and architecture, no matter if it contains input from the listed participants, or from anyone else that has something to say.  ::)

So why don't we let it run its course, then you can tell us how awful we did/it is and why...

...and I will second Barona, I'm a fan.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I agree that this is fun and would also enjoy it on many levels of discussion if we knew who was voting and what votes they gave.  If it was done this way we would have fodder for years of interesting in depth architectural discussion as people defended their opinions.

1.  It makes NO sense to nominate a course unless you yourself would vote for it as one of the top 100 in the world ... otherwise it's just wasting everyone else's time.  Do all the nominations so far really qualify by this standard?

2.  I'll de-nominate The Renaissance Club since the architect himself would not vote for that one.  Saticoy and San Diego CC seem highly unlikely choices, too.

3.  I will second Capilano (even though I wouldn't vote for it myself) because I swear it was on my original list, or should have been.

4.  Are you going to let architects vote -- assuming we don't vote for our own courses?

5.  On a quick read through the list there are 99 courses I haven't seen.  (I guess that leaves 290 I have seen.)  So, please don't add to the ballot, because I really don't think there could be 100 courses worthy of the top 100 that I've never gone to look at.
