Anthony Gray

Knowing what you know now, what course would you like to return to?

  I played Royal Dornach around 10 years ago. It was the last course on my trip. I was tired did not play well and loved Cruden Bay the day before.
 So it is unfair to judge RD considering on my first experience.

  After playing Pinehurst 2 three times and spending time walking the course I would love to return to Royal Dornach to compare the two.I just wish it was not too far out of the way.

 Also the 9 holer I learned to play golf on in Fairmont WV I would love to play again.

  Sand Hills
 and your example, Royal Dornoch.

  These are the two courses that I've played in my life that I wish I could have been a better golfer. Also, the time just flew by. 

  Both of these courses are very natural in their design presentations.

 Also, Carne Golf Links in Ireland.

The Creek Club - I considered it an out of date members course rather than something of significance when I played it nearly 20 years ago.

I'd like to play the Cascades course at the homestead again.  Played it in a IJGT tournament almost 10 years ago when I was a know it all 18 yr. old.  I didn't absorb the experience at all and can recollect very few holes now because of it.  Ah, the wisdom that come with age.

The Ocean Course:  I played it about 10 years ago in late winter with 25-35 mph winds and I didn't get a chance to really analyze it.

I played at Muirfield and thought it was fantastic and would love to see if I still had the same opinion.
On the other hand a return to Turnberry would be interesting as I did noy think it deserved the kudos some give it.

I didn't realize how good I had it when in college I played Praire Dunes, Oak Tree (a number of times) and Twin Hills. I was young and dumb (I still am) and didn't appreciate what I was playing. I played Southern Hills a number of times but have been back since to appreciate it more.

Sycamore Springs and Sunblest.  Two NLE's from my 'ute - at least one of which y'all are lucky to have never seen.  Not the kind of courses anyone did photo diaries of, to be sure.
 
Now that I understand the game and its playing fields a bit better than did then, I would like to revisit them.  I'm sure I could finally identify a few favorite corners and cubbies on which to hang some solid reminisences.

As it is, my memories of those courses are fading fast; I played my dozens of rounds on them when all I saw was ball, hole, and stuff in my way.

Shoreacres--I played it a bunch of times in the early/mid-90's, before I had even a modicum of knowledge about golf history or architecture. I recognized it was a special place and loved playing there, but didn't appreciate it in the same way I would now.

Crystal Downs if only to putt-great movement in all 18 greens.I would also consider this a quiet haven to get away from it all.    Jack

I've only played stateside and for what little I've played ... it would be Black Mesa for me.  Then Rawls.

Rawls is probably the funner of the two but I felt there was a lot more going on at Black Mesa.

Heading back there in April...

Anthony - no regrets, because I couldn't have done anything differently. But now that I know how unlikely it is that I'll be back in Michigan any time soon, I really wish I'd played the Kingsley Club when I had the chance.

Of course, if I had played it you wouldn't be able to shut me up on Tim Bert's tribute thead, what with all my opinions and such...

Jack - I think I'd head back to Ireland for another go at RCD, RP, Ballybunion, Lahinch and the rest.

I appreciated both courses when I played there while in college, but would do so much more ten years later.

I would also want to play with the same group - my dad and two Irish uncles. No matter what happened, there would be great craic in the pub after the round.

Pine Valley. Played it once and loved the experience. Would love to play it again.
Other than that, TOC which I have played probably 50 times but love it every time. I am in Scotland week after next so will look at playing it again and pop into Castle Stuart to take a look.
