Courses that have both nines ending with Par 3's
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:01:06 PM »
Answering Aiken Golf Club in the "most Fun" thread and then seeing the "guess the picture-front nines that end with Par 3's  thread got me thinking that both nines at Aiken end with Par 3's.

There must be more courses where both nines end with one shotters, however I can't recall any.

If this has been discussed before I apologize.  I did a very brief search to no avail.

Two in Rochester:

Brook Lea (Ross), both of which are excellent par threes.
Midvale (Trent Jones)  RTJ's first, with a neat short uphill ninth and a brutal, long 18th.

Hill Crest in Lower Burrell PA, just up river from Oakmont.

Both are about 120 yards in length and uphill.  They go almost opposite directions and the green on #9 is brutal while the one on #18 is only hard.

Emil Loeffler did 9 holes and James Harrison added 9 more.

The Lakes in Sydney, Australia has both 9's finish with par 3's.

Not sure if that will still be the case after Mike.C. finishes with the current course changes though?

My home course here in KY; Miller Memorial has ending par 3.  Neither hole really special--both of them require similar shots.

The old POCOSHOCK Golf Course here in Richmond used to have 9th and 18th par 3 finishing holes.  I totally rebuilt it a few years back and took that feature out.  The new 9th is a par 3 over marsh and the new 18th is a risk/reward short (520) par 5.

Both holes were named in a recent survey as "favorites" with the public golf course population.

One of my favorite hidden gems: West Shore CC near Harrisburg, PA ends both nines on Par 3s.

Sophisticated greens and a recent renovation by Gil Hanse make this worth a look.

Also has one of the few uphill opening holes I've played.

Buck Hill Falls in the poconos has 27 holes and two of the nines end with a par 3.  one of which "the red nine" starts and ends with a par 3.  i actually immediately thought of this course when i saw the "fun" thread.

Bogey, how is that course anyway?

Rich,

9 and 18 will still be short holes at The Lakes.
9 will be a little shorter than it was and 18 is marginally longer - about 220 yards.
By my count there have been four different versions of that hole in 15 years - Devlin,Newton,Thomson and now Clayton.

Hopefully now that it has gone back to a slightly revised version of Devlin's hole it will stay for a while.

Here is the finishing hole taken just before the Champions Tour event this year. From the back tee it plays 205 slightly downhill. A recent renovation took place over the summer. The work included tree clearing, reclaiming of green space on four holes, and a complete bunker overhaul including a return to the steep grass faced bunkers from Tillinghast's original.

To my recollection, Springfield CC, located in West Springfield, Massachusetts, has par-3's that conclude both nines.  Neither are that exciting, and the whole golf course is something of a mish-mash...

It just came to me, Chattanooga G and CC.  Uphill par 3 ninth and the long closing 18th one shotter.

Tan-Tara, a meek course north of Buffalo, begins and ends each nine with a par three...that's right, 1, 9, 10 and 18 are all one-shot holes over the same ditch.  They all stink.

JNC, I've heard Green Lakes and Durand Eastman were Trent Jones' first courses and had never heard that Midvale was his first.  What's your source?

There's a plaque at Midvale that says it was built in 1929.  I believe Stanley Thompson may have had some input but I think it is usually considered his first solo effort.  It was definitely built before Durand Eastman.
