Tom,

I thought this was a golf architecture website, that sometimes poses as a political bitching site....not a soft porn site.  ;)

Hence the non-comment till now!

Buick just dumped Tiger.  How do you spell ouch?  The PGA Tour is toast.

On a related matter, I enjoy making up my own words and every year the dictionary adds new ones so who decides what is misspelled and why do we care?  It seems to matter as much as wearing white after labor day.

Buick should dump the PGA tour also. GM should probably dump Buick.

Words can be loads of fun.  Tiger spun these right off the green.

Said Woods: "I am very proud of the long standing partnership I've had with GM and have enjoyed being a part of the company's dramatic product evolution. We've had a lot of fun together and I participated in some unique and rewarding activities. We've enjoyed a tremendous partnership over the years and we will maintain strong ties with the many people at GM we call friends."

Nuts and bolts:  is there an easy way to spell check without going off-site?

I never bought the suggestion that poor spelling and high intelligence are positively correlated.  Some of us have never learned the rules of language and grammar well.

I use Firefox as my web browser. I installed a plug-in spell checker for it so that no matter what website or forum I'm on, it does a pretty good job of letting me know when I typed poorly.

Of course it does nothing for sentence structure, appropriate use of punctuation marks, phrasing or clarity. Damn.

Joe

Actually, the new Firefox has a built-in Spell Check that works on all internet applications. It's a good thing. But I don't always use Firefox, I generally use Internet Explorer.

Say it ain't so! JKM, the rebel with a cause, uses IR over Firefox! Please please please just say no!

Actually, I'm a pretty good speller, always have been, but I'm surprised how often Firefox catches me. Sometimes typos, sometimes ignorance.

And tell me British spelling isn't way cooler than ours....

Damn, when did I become a rebel? I had not heard about any of this. But I will take the title. Very nice.

Lloyd,
I just got done reading the Walk In The Park blog, and I can too say that I'm ready for a stiff drink.

It's all about the Line of Charm--everything that exists between me and the bar. Hopefully Kate Winslet will be in that direct line--my direct line of instinct.

From the new Vanity Fair, Kate emulating Catherine Deneuve (Oui! Oui!):

wow, i saw her on the cover and she looked good there ;D

i need to get a copy of that issue

Very, Very, Very nice. I am thinking bad thoughts.

Me thinks she is not a 'Maiden' (my attempt at a golf-related comment).

Speaking of lines of charm ...

Is this a mere coincidence, do you think?

At Vanity Fair (and perhaps at other non-porn magazines), any picture like this goes by a generic nickname.

Any near-nude is known as a "Max Bare."

Thank you very much. I'll be here all week.

Well, actually, no, I won't! Heading for Grandma's house!

Lloyd is probably too polite to say so, but in Brit-speak "quite" means "not very."  Knowing him, I doubt he would call Kate "quite" lovely, unless he is actually married to Catherine Deneuve......

Rihc,

I must have been away from Blighty for too long. If I said that Catherine Deneuve was "quite lovely" it certainly would not mean that she was anything else but lovely. I think "quite good" does not mean bad, half bad or even slightly bad.

I do not like jousting with a Stanford poet but I think you are wrong, or the ages have blunted my Englishisms.

Quite is a very flexible word, and it works very well with English understatement. I think quite lovely could mean many things and is probably very eyebrow dependent. But hearing it out of context I'd tend to agree with Bob. Quite lovely is short for really quite lovely, like quite brilliant. Tommy being in unashamed anglophile mood I'm sure he meant it that way.

Lloyd (and Bob)

I agree that it depnends on the context and the body language.  Chambers lists the three main definitions, which run a pretty large gamut, as below.

quite adverb 1 completely; entirely • I quite understand • It's not quite clear what happened. 2 to a high degree • quite exceptional. 3 rather; fairly; to some or a limited degree • quite a nice day • quite enjoyed it.

Trust the limeys to have three varieties of "quite," just as the Eskmos have 14 words for "snow" and the Scots 27 words for "drunk."

REALLY quite lovely was exact the context I was shooting for. My apologies for "shagging" that up! Thanks to J-PP, Bob and Lloyd for showing me the error of my ways!

ONCE AGAIN, keeping this ON-THE-TOPIC of Golf Course Architecture, (for those that can't read very well) would you consider that a "Dog Leg?" Not by definition I say....

C) Lloyd, you've brought to light a pet peeve of mine. I can't spell at all so I've made the spell checker my friend. It's not that difficult to use from what I can figure.

3.) There's no reason not to spell check or to reread what  one has written. I mean if you can't take the time to capitalize the word "English," or let the computer correct your spelling, I can't be bothered to read what you write and neither can lots of other people.

XI) Any discussion that gets Naccarato posting is good one. One that gets him posting pictures of hot women is a great one.

f.) Clicking on the thesaurus from time to time is a good idea as well. Nothing wrong with expanding the vocabulary.
