Kiwi Challenge- Kauri Cliffs
« on: November 15, 2008, 04:14:08 PM »
For anyone watching the Kiwi Challenge on NBC.

Why is this course not mentioned more often?
Kauri Cliffs looks amazing.

Has anyone on here ever played there?

And it appears to be in HD.  Here are frame grabs of the par 4 10th at Kauri Cliffs:

Yep, it's 1080i HD, and is a "Made for HD" event.

But b/c of some bad weather, the Philly NBC station is switching into SD mode to give weather updates below the picture.  Hence, no HD frame grabs of the 11th hole.  :(

EDIT:  in the hi-lites later I was able to get one HD frame grab on the par 4 11th:

Joe - you're right.  WCAU is still using 60's technology.  Their news studio is a conference room...  We're so lucky, aren't we!

I just looked at their rates - they're about doubled for non NZ residents.    How's the job market in NZ?

Really?  In the few minutes I have watched, he repeated himself mid-sentence ...

As for the course, take away the ocean and you have Cinnabar Hills ...

Before anyone jumps down my throat -- I confess to never having been to NZ. Kauri Cliffs certainly looked impressive on the tube but the downhill shots over and over again demonstrated for me a lack of imagination on the part of the designer. Again, I will re-emphasize before the barking dogs emerge -- I am making admittingly, deep left field seat analysis, but the course didn't seem to have many unique / exciting design elements that were equal or greater than the visual elements provided.

For those who can comment -- I'd like to know if the prevailing spring wind pattern at the course is what the players encountered when playing the first round at KC. For example, the wind was helping considerably from right-to-left on #16 and #17 and a good bit as well on #18.

Seeing the TV pics of Cape Kidnappers makes me set aside time to watch tomorrow's telecast to see how the Doak layouts stacks up against what Kauri Cliffs offered.

Matt,

That's exactly what I'm thinking.  I'n anxious to see Cape Kidnappers on the screen, so I can compare how shots are played around the greens, and whether we see players playing away from the hole at times.  I'll also be interested to hear the announcers' comments, and how excited they sound about the golf course.

Not to jack the thread, but how basically, are these captures obtained?  I assume a DVR is being used...

Tom, I guess you might say they are from a DVR.  But not exactly.  I have a HD tuner connected to my computer and I can record the broadcasts to my hard drive.  While a show is in progress, it is real easy to do a keystroke for a frame grab.  The hardware and software I use to accomplish all this is from Elgato.

Joe Bausch,

I don't want to dismiss your effort to capture a few pictures of the golf course for us to look at.  Very thoughtful of you.
