How to post pictures

Several folks have asked how to post pictures recently.  Pictures add a whole new dimension to the provocative debate on this site and the more pictures the better...

Step 1:  Decide the pictures you would like to post from your home computer and upload them to a web based service like Flickr or Photobucket.  Both of those services are free.  Both services have an "uploader" feature that can be followed to easily find the pictures on your hard-drive and upload to a static place on their service.  That static URL is what you will need to post pictures on GCA.

Step 2:  Obviously you have figured out how to post on GCA.  Now all you need are the correct "tags".  So whenever you want to post a picture that you have uploaded into a post as an example just type:   The picture URL of your static online picture location in between the tags.

I set up the flickr account, but I can't figure out how to get the picture code from the account.

There is no longer any need to host your images. When you make a post, simply click 'Additional Options' below the Message box and add an image through the attachment feature.

Thanks. It is so easy to use that feature. Now I have to learn how to resize my photos below 128mb. My office PC isn't giving me that otpion.

Why do people buy PC's when they can a MAC and get things done?

I knew that we could now post directly to the site, but figured that was not the preferred method since doing so would mean higher hosting costs (i.e. storing all those photo files).  This method is probably OK for just a pic or two here or there, but with the need to resize to 128kb and limit of four photos per post, really photobucket is the way to go.

I don't use flickr so can't help with that.  In photobucket, it's pretty easy & I'm guessing flickr is similar.  Just click anywhere on the "IMG Code" block and the word "copied" will pop up.  Then just go to the GCA post, point to where you want the photo to appear, right click and then select paste.  The link to your image at photobucket goes there, then when the post goes up so does the pic.  Below is an example of what the photobucket choices look like.  Posting pics is way easier than it seems after you've done it once or twice.

Ok, I think this try worked. I won't comment on the photo. But lets just say it's of three greenskeepers, and two of them are legends. The guy in the middle isn't too bright - he can't even post a picture on CGA.  :P

Ian was right, I have corrected that problem and allowed pictures up to 200 kb. To resize images, you can use something as basic at Microsoft Paint and click 'Image', 'Stretch/Skew' and reduce the size.

If you have any of the standard MS tools, one of them should work.

I use Picture Manager to resize when needed.

Look up 4 posts from yours (by Ben Dewar).

Another option is to download the free Irfanview, which I use to
do batch resizing/renaming at the same time.  This saves me massives amounts of time over the old
way of having to resize and rename dozens or photos at a time.

This is not a 'new' feature per se, it's been available since the site's 'upgrade' earlier this year
(February-ish?).  I will never use it, since only the 1500 GCA members can view them, and
only while logged in.  I don't see why lurkers should be denied viewing pics we post.  Most can't
be members if they wanted to, with a limited supply/turnover.

I find the easiest way for me to change the size of an image is to open a folder select the image (using my pc windows XP) and  hitting the e-mail this file link in folder tasks - it gives me the option to resize before e-mailing (show more options toggle).  Once it is in the new mail message I drag it from the attachment line to my desktop.
Ta dah.

No other programs necessary....
