Any new courses coming to New Jersey?
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:26:11 PM »
I don't belive that any new courses opened up in New Jersey this year.  Does anyone know if there are any new courses opening up in New Jersey in the next year or two?

There was a Pete Dye course in the works called Eagle's Lake Reserve, which has been suspended, if not called off entirely.  I was working on a chapter about it for my Pete Dye Book, but it obviously didn't make the final cut.  Here's a typically irreverent comment by the man himself:

As the Eagles Lake Reserve project was in its formative stages, Pete went before the Mayor and the planning board of Stafford Township, New Jersey.  His comment was, “Your state already has the number one golf course in the world,” he said, referring to Clementon’s Pine Valley.  “I hope to make it number two.”

Joel,
Did he really say that?
Was it transcribed?

I'd find that comment to be more like The Donald.
If he was going to get the #2 spot, he would have done so by now.

Cheers

Eagle's Lake will not be built in the near future, if at all.

If you had looked at page2, you would have found this thread:

I don't know of any new courses being built in South Jersey.

Running Deer was recently purchased by Ron Jaworski's company:

Rick:

Golf development in NJ, if you didn't already know this, is a very costly undertaking. Just ask folks like Eric Bergstol with his patience in the creation of Bayonne GC.

The public side may offer a few more layouts -- but I see the majority of them being tied to various taxpayer-oriented jurisdictions. There are more than enough CCFAD courses and if the economy really tanks as they say it's likely a few of them may go belly-up (see what happened to Steve Smyers work at Blue Heron Pines East, as just one example.

Too bad about the Dye layout not happening in Stafford Twsp. The Garden State is one of the few places not touched by Pete's hand.

Nah..no transcription.  That tale was told to me by the GC developer who was engaging the services of Pete. I was pre-interviewing him and thinking seriously about putting his GC in the Dye Book, which obviously never happened. His name escapes me, but I recall he owned some sort of construction or concrete company, and was building a GC as a sideline

Rick,

I walked Black Oak in Chester, NJ  today as they had a sneak preview for members! About half the holes are done and they are looking at a 2010 opening. As Matt suggests, the approval process in NJ is impossible, and these developers went through YEARS and countless dollars getting this through...

I have heard that NJ is a tough place to get a course built because of the expense of the land, red tape, and wetland sanctions.  Glad that Running Deer was bought, I went there a few months ago and it looked disgraceful.  Nice piece of land, but maintanance was horrible.  I was also wondering if they would ever re-open Blue Heron PInes East because no houses have been built on this land yet? Heard it was a great course
