Yesterday, Monday, I went to Winged Foot for Matt Burrows annual MS outing. But there was more. There was also a tandem outing of superintendents (the good playing superintendents) playing the last leg of their superintendent team tournament or something.
So there was a lot going on----eg superintendents and Matt's friends in Matt's outing and a tournament of superintendents on Matt's course, Winged Foot. And after golf it seems like we were all thrown together which was cool. Matt is Winged Foot's new super. He's one of our favorites or my favorites because I've always considered him the ultimate in what I would call the new breed of "GoGo" supers who are into all the elements of F&F and the IMM (I hadn't been to Winged Foot in maybe twenty five years).
You guys should have seen the place and the two courses. It gives me great encouragement that the ultimate in the IMM is alive and well, at least it is at Winged Foot. You should have seen how those courses played and how they looked and particularly the greens---eg ultra fast with the "imagination level" requirement just off the charts. And all that after a deluge on Saturday!
And what architecture those courses are, particularly, as some of us were saying, in the sort of "artistic" style of the naturalistic interpretation of A.W. Tillinghast.
