Next Week On Dexter......Industry Hills GC
« on: October 20, 2008, 01:42:36 AM »
Hopefully I fooled some of you, this isn't off-topic!

I'm a huge fan of the Showtime series Dexter, which is mostly all filmed in and around the Long Beach Marina/Belmont Heights area here in SoCal. Watching this next weeks previews, it looks like the film crews meandered off track and came to the City of Industry to get a look at the recent Casey O'Callaghan remodel that took place up there on both the Ike and Babe courses.

Any work should be a huge improvement and I'm hoping Casey got to remove a bunch of trees in front of bunkers, as well as figured out something to do with the ridiculous 9th hole on the Babe. (one of the worst holes I've ever played)(of many)

The much maligned 9th before the remodel:

I think the 9th's only salvation is turning it into a par-3.

That would be a great idea! However you would only be able to do it after I dynamited it!

There used to be a green on the top of that hill beyond the current green. It was called Upper and the lower one was called Lower. Imagine that! (No, you don't have to. I was only joking....)

What is the purpose of all those screens. Is it just to keep balls from getting lost (or too Lost ;D)

Ahhhh, the 9th on the Babe.....last time out I holed out for a 2 so was able to ignore the awfulness of the hole, albeit for a few minutes.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Houses.  Lots of houses below.

I always thought that short of death, the walk from the 8th green to the 9th tee was the closest I would get to a descent into hell anywhere on this planet.

The hole should properly be named Torquemada, simply because its the complete destruction of the spirit of golf....

Is it the worst hole I've ever been on? Yes, it is one of many....

If one died and went to Hell, confined to play one golf hole for all eternity, this hole would be the hole, along with ____________ (Insert favorite water-featured Ted Robinson hole here)

Remember countless times watching some poor schmo hit it short on #9
Only to watch as their ball bounced and rolled down the cart path in front of the green, 50 yards down the hill, and out of bounds!   Easily the worst hole on an otherwise wretched golf course.

A few commercials and films have been shot at Industry Hills Ike course. Michael Douglas' "Falling Down" is one that shot a golf scene on #10 of the Ike.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Tommy,

If I didn't grow up playing at Ike and Babe, I would accuse you of some demonic photoshop trickery. However, seeing that image again brings chills. IH just hasn't been the same since they got rid of the funicular.  ;)
I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Tommy,

Wasn't that high green called the "tournament" green? Later used as a sod garden.

Tony,
I believe you might be correct as far as it being called the Tournament Green. But at one time they had signs--if you can imagine that--saying "upper" and "lower."

yes, the green became a sod farm, and they had an actual practice/lesson green which was eventually changed into a sod farm  off of #16 fairway on the Ike.

What a special, special......Garbage dump......... :D

Well, just watched this weeks Dexter and it looks like Jimmy Smits and Michael B. hall have developed a better way to play the 18th on the Ike--BACKWARDS, IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!

I shuddered when I saw three new palms trees installed since my last visit, (when on a photo assignment for another architect about 5 years ago) right directly in front of a fairway bunker. Casey, please tell me that you didn't do that!

I'm sure it took an industrial decision to install those wonderful palms...

Tom,

It also looks like they both could use some golf lessons ??? :o

You would think they would learn to be able to hit the ball just a little if they are going to be fimed on TV. I guess Dexter's shot was perfect  though.... as he "sliced it" :o ;D

Robert,
Yes, the swings on both of them were pretty bad, but Industrial hills brings out that kind of swinging in the best of us.....
