Chris & Jeff, the 12th on the Yellow is the original 5th from the Blue Course. The restorative recreation was done very well but is missing one of iits important original features. This is how the hole was described in the July 19th, 1936 Farmingdale Post prior to yhe beginning of the USGA Public Links Championship: "Hole No. 5, 300 yards. There are fairways for the short and long player. The short player goes to the right and then over mounds to a tightly trapped green. The long player must carry mounds 190 yards from the tee. A pond to the left adds a mental hazard to the drive."
That same article had a detailed copy of the design drawing showing both the pond on the left and a huge bunker at the end of the right side of the fairway as well as a small one just short of this and in the right rough.
The reason that I don't view this as an example of an iconic template REEF hole is because it is a par-4. This is the only known Tillinghast par-4 REEF hole. It also is the only purposeful drivable par-4 that Tilly designed for any of the 4 courses. It is unique among its peers. That is why I used the original 17th hole at Indian Hills CC, because it contained every specific feature as described in Tilly's article about his REEF hole, and is the best example of one that is downhill as well.
