Re: So what takes Beechtree's place on the I-95 corridor?

 Jay,

I mentioned Patriot's Glen for its proximity to I-95.The course is fine and reasonably priced but not in the league of Beechtree or Scotland Run. I  would add Glen Mills and agree with Deerfield.

BTW when Obama asks me to join the Treasury Dept. I will be more interested in D.C. courses.

You need to get off the turnpike to get there. I love #12. Once you get to #2 I think almost all of the holes are strong.

Here's the link.  It's a Stephen Kay course, which means we should get some excellent architecture.

wow those cannon ridge pictures look great.  Look at the bunker placement and the green contours.  Why don't we talk about THAT place more?

CJ,

Both Westfields and Cannon Ridge are really nice courses with excellent conditioning.  If you GCA guys put together an event at these two courses I will drive up to NVA from TN to play.  RTJ where they played The President's Cup for years can be seen from I believe the 14th hole at Cannon Ridge.  I personally like Westfields better than CR just because of all the trees and the tighter rolling fairways and use of natural hazards and really great bunkering.

Matt, I think you're confusing Cannon Ridge with Stonewall.  Cannon Ridge is in Fredericksburg, probably a solid 80+ minutes from where RTJ is.  Stonewall is right next door to RTJ off Hwy 29 in Bristow / Gainesville, VA and you can indeed see #18 on RTJ from #14 at Stonewall.

CJ,

You are correct the restaurant at Stonewall is The Brass Cannon.  I still think I have played Cannon Ridge before it has been a couple years ago along with Laurel Hill and the courses at Lansdowne.  I have friend that is a member at Congressional so that is always a treat to play.

Tom Doak's Riverfront in Suffolk, VA is an obvious option.  Only 2/3 the cost of Beechtree.

It is about 1 & 15 minutes from Richmond, VA down I-64 to I-664.  The course is approx 1.5 miles from I-664.

Heading back to I-95 or I-85, take US 58 (four lane highway) going west.

Got any pix?  Is that public?

I didn't like Stonewall at all.  Over $100 for houses lining many holes, then a few along the water.  I didn't think it was worth the price just because you get to see one hole of RTJ Club.  It seemed over priced and under-designed.

Lester G
i just played The Rock on tuesday, and had a very enjoyable day considering that the winds were blowing at 40mph.  you did a very nice job of fitting a very fun and challenging 18 holes on a very compact property.  i think it is about 6500 from the tips.  there were some holes in the begining which are probably a little too difficult for the average muni player, but i am sure that was due to envio constaints.  i really linked the finishing holes.

great work

D_Malley,

Thanks for the comments.  There were many constraints at the Rock, all of which continued to impact my design.  All-in-all, I am happy that we got 18 holes in and didn't lose the property altogether to development of the roads.  Tough site with strict conditions, but we are proud of the results.

Thanks again.

Has anyone played Riverfront?  How come we never talk about it?

When did it open?

Here's the website.  Looks to be a good option for those going to the Phish reunion shows.

Riverfront...
I live 10 minutes from Riverfront.

I doubt that I qualify as anyone.

A while back there was a thread named 'Tom Doak's lesser known courses' or something like that.
It had some pics of Riverfront.

Jay and Carl:

I found this thread with photos:

http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,32803.0.html

Tom D only had a small paragraph of info.  Tom what are some of the features we should look for if we go play it?  When was it built and is there anything similar to beechtree?  What made you choose the routing you finally ended up with?

Mike, Jay et al,

The point of comparison is Beechtree.  I have played 3 rounds at Beechtree this last Sunday & Monday.

You have to put a couple things out of your mind at Riverfront:
1. it is a housing development course, particularly the front 9
2. the greens are bent
3. the fairways are bermuda
4. the course is much softer than Beechtree, Riverfront plays longer than Beechtree
5. the green speeds are slower than Beechtree (they have to be in order to be playable)

The green complexes at Riverfront are more complex in their slopes and demi-domes than Beechtree.  The lies in the fairway are a bit more rolling and softly bumpy at Riverfront, even though the overall elevation change on the site is slight.

wow.  so are you saying the greens are better?  And the undulations in the fwys?  but the natural setting is not as pretty?

Maybe we should get a group down there to play that one next spring...
