GC names that are "frightening"
« on: October 20, 2008, 08:25:09 PM »
Working on a fluff feature concernng Halloween--themed GC names, and figured the collective brain-power of GCA would be of great benefit.

Off the top of my head I can think of Pumpkin Ridge and White Witch.  Devil's Pulpit is a bit of a stretch.  Can anyone assist with some GC names that invoke Halloween--witch, ghost, goblin, graveyard, etc, in the title?

Thanks for the input...

How about a visual?

#12 at Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria, BC.  A slightly (and I mean slightly) missed tee shot on this uphill par 4 puts you smack in the graveyard.

If Devil's Pulpit is a bit of a stretch, I guess "Devil's Knob" at Wintergreen here in Virginia would also.  Shephard's Hollow in Michigan is a stretch too, though the way those pine trees were planted perfectly in a row kinda freaked me out.   :)  There's Settler's Ghost up in Ontario, Hell's Point here in Virginia Beach.

Not golf courses, but I'm sure you could come up with a nice list of golf course features with Halloween related names - Devil's A**hole and Hell's Half Acre at PV; Hell Bunker and the Valley of Sin at TOC, etc.

Furnace Creek (kind of has a boiler-room slasher film-like ring to it) in Death Valley

or

Congressional?

I don't have the pic (I'm on the road right now), but your pic reminded me of the 16th at The Creek.

The Brits have a habit of naming golf holes (usually controversial par-3s) after bloody battles in which they were routed - Majuba and Spion Kop are a couple of examples.

It never thrills me to do the work for another golf writer, but hey, that's what I do on a daily basis.  So here it is:

I agree with John, but for something really frightening, how about:

"Tommy Naccarato:  HEEEEEE'S BACK!!!!!!"

Thanks for all the great input--much appreciated.  And I can't believe I couldn't think of Bloody Point on my own--I've played there and written about it at least a dozen times over the years..

Joel,

Here is a link to similar thoughts.  Does anyone know the identity of "The GolfBlogger"?

Here in Nova Scotia, we have a course entitled "Witch's Ridge"

Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

"widow's walk" maybe?

Of course Sleepy Hollow would make a great story at Halloween. ;D

Heck, Sleepy Hollow makes for a great story and round any time of year.
