Depends on where in Massachusetts and your tolerance for cool to cold weather golf.  It can snow on Thanksgiving and also be delightful.  Typically once you get past Halloween and certainly mid-November golf in Massachusetts is iffy unless you don't mind temps that are likely to be in the 40's.  Best conditions likely to be the immediate Boston area (not north) and Cape Cod.

Funny, Sean - I always fashioned you a Westward Ho.

(Still bitter about losing to you and Choi at Chambers).

Mike,

We generally considered Veterans Day to be the official close of the golf season; of course that didn't stop us from playing, but it is a completely different version of golf as you know it. Most of the prominent Clubs cover their greens in a plastic covering around October these days. The Cape remains playable year round however.

I would agree with the others, although covers don't go on until a big snow is likely/expected....I'd say generally 11/20 to 12/1.  I have certainly played on Thanksgiving, and these days, it seems to stay 35-50 degrees into December.

I would second that most courses on the Cape stay "open" all year round, but best case for winter golf is a 40 degree sunny day without too much wind.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Mike,
The average highs for November in Hyannis drop a couple of degrees every 5 days or so. They start at 56 on Nov. 1 and lose about 10 degrees by month's end. Average lows for the month start at around 40 and end around 32.

If it's cloudy or damp, with winds coming off the ocean, 50 can feel like 30.

I've played Christmas day and New Years day on Cape Cod. A friend had 12 rounds in February a few years ago. Watch out for the wind, hypothermia is a common when the wind blows. Some of the new polypropo fabrics work great.

Of course you can play in November.  Of course I have some pretty interesting memories of winter golf in New Jersey.  I can't tell you how many times we had to stop a pond hockey game so players could tee off during their rounds.  The tee shot was directly over our "rink"  :D

I know for the Bruins, it usually starts around first week of April.

I have had some very pleasant Thanksgivings around Boston and Gloucester.  Not sure what the courses are like then.

Ray and Pat

I once played a Cape Cod course in January which was forgettable except for the hole where my opponent fatted his iron on a short par-3 only to see it bounce off the ice and end up 2 feet from the hole.

I remember Deal Lake well, as my eventual bride-to-be lived in Oakhurst and we wandered to and around the lake from time to time in the late 80's.  Thanks for the memories.

Michael:
It is feasible but may depend on where.  Cape Cod is generally playable all the time unless there is snow on the course.
The other issue you can run into is using temporary greens.  Once the ground freezes many Superintendant set up temps and also cover the greens.
If the weather stays ok you can play.

A few years back there was a weird day in January where they forcasted low 50's.  Me and my buddy went down to Oyster Harbors to play and it was sunny, low 60's no wind, total freak day.  We played 18, then 18, then we were sure we wouldn't get another shot til the spring, so we played another 9.  I couldn't get out of bed the next morning.

An aside for Mass golf fans.  As had been announced Waverly Oaks is closing.  The good news is the permitting process is taking awhile so that instead of closing this year they anticipate being open thru October 2009....

old age is clearly setting in.  Had previously posted this, but thought it was 2008 not 2009.
