As we widen our 1926 Flynn course back to its original intent the bunkering at the green becomes a very important part of one's thinking and planning. Once trees are removed that caused a boring pitch out ,you now need to make decisions about club selection, distance control, go for it or layup, etc. The angles of the greens and the bunker placement shine.

especially as you keep the course firmer and firmer...for low handicap players, the firmess of the green makes the bunkers more of a factor than width would.

Certainly the firmness matters. And then you have the slopes that come off of the bunkers that also create problems for recovery shots .

I'm thinking here of mishits that can be 30-40 yards off line. Trees were often planted to catch these shots but they eliminated the strategy at the green as a result.
