sorry Kalen....couldn't resist....it's hard to answer for many of us because we haven't played or seen all the work of any architect

I'm very familiar with Flynn and Tom Doak's work ...also Crenshaw and Coore....Willie Park Jr.......etc etc but I certainly can't tell you if they had any courses they totally bolluxed ...just haven't played or seen them all

If anybody has pitched a no- loser you'd have to be a true acolyte to know same

As to the Confidential Guide" and the Doak rating system...to this day it's amazing just how much research he did...and knowing Tom a little..he probably didn't take much ( if anything ) on word of mouth

I've only played enough of a few architects to chime in.

Of Tim Liddy's I don't know that I would call any of them clunkers, but I have a few that don't suit my eye.  Cambridge probably being the most obvious example.  But to be honest they were in the middle of a grass change and had just been through some heavy rains.  So I should give it another chance.

For Pete Dye, there are a few clunkers in the Indy area in my opinion.  Sahm Park and Maple Creek are the first that come to mind.

Perry Maxwell had more than his share.  It is weird how I can easily put his work into 4 distinct categories.  The great stuff is among the best ever, but the lows are pretty low.  I think in his case he was doing what Tom Doak was talking about earlier.  Taking jobs because he needed to and not because he was in the position to choose.

After those three I don't know that I have seen enough work by any other architect, except perhaps Ross now that I think about it, but none of the ones I have seen would fall into that category.  Some of it is very overrated, but not in clunker territory.

Andy,

Can you rank the Fazios you have played?

The Alotian
Karsten Creek
Aldarra
World Woods Pine Barrens
Flint Hills National
The Estancia Club
World Woods Rolling Oaks
Butler National (George/Tom)
Butterfield Trail
Red Sky

Alotian would rank quite a bit ahead of the rest (perhaps as high as a Doak 9--but I just played it Tuesday so it needs to sink in more). Karsten through Butler would all be fairly close together (Doak 5-7 range), , with Butterfield and Red Sky a little bit behind those others (4-5). For those wondering why Butler National is so low, I just found it to be very difficult without really being terribly interesting. The most unique holes out there to me were #7 and #18 before the tree removal. Maybe if I played it more than once I'd see more interesting features. #6-9 is a pretty cool stretch.
