We were just in Hawaii......Pearl Harbor is worth the visit but it certainly doesn't look like the movie set. There are sign posted not to leave any valuables in your car so keep that in mind.

If you're only on Oahu for a day, Pearl Harbor and a drive around the island up to the North Shore and back down are well worth the time, rather than golf; IMHO.

Hanauma Bay Reservation isn't far from Honolulu and certainly well worth the visit - just need to book a time to park on the website.  We continued up the coast, had lunch at a food truckcourt and continued around the island and back down to Honolulu and our hotel.  Easy drive (I live in the NYC suburbs and Honolulu traffic was frustrating but not as bad as here).

Thanks Bruce.  That sounds like good advice. I will probably skip golf on Oahu and try to squeeze in a round on another island. I'm surprised and a little disappointed that the public golf situation on Oahu has few good options. It's not really a golf trip and we have plans on the other islands,.  It's the only state I haven't played golf in, so I'd regret not playing once.

I played Oahu CC in 2017 and quite enjoyed it. Steep land and some wild golf, so very different to either Waialae or Mid-Pacific. It's private, I believe, but I just emailed them and they hooked me up.

Royal Hawaiian with the right attitude is worth a visit.   It is a terrible golf course but how often are you going to play golf in a tropical jungle?    It is a gorgeous setting.

Olomana is very basic public golf.   My biggest memory is of the loud chickens on the back nine and the noise the cups made when a ball was holed.

Waialaei was the best course I played by far but the version I saw would be a lower tier Raynor on the mainland.

I did play one of the courses at Turtle Bay.   It was the most pleasant experience of the public courses I saw.

Hmmm I played the Makai course at Princeville and enjoyed it immensely! Played there last January, and felt the holes got more solid as the round continued. The drive up from the harbor was beautiful and very peaceful.

Not crucial but an added experience was the staff at Princeville, very friendly and accommodating. They also have an excellent half way house with some of the best food we had on the islands.

Yes it is but earlier in the thread one of the guys had warned against a side trip to Princeville, hence my comments 😉

If you are going to venture out to see Royal Hawaiian, I would recommend doing it in the summer time when we are away from the rainy season.  The course is generally unplayable during the winter months due to the high level of rainfall.  I don't think it's a great course by any means, but there are some fun holes and it's a nice opportunity to learn what NOT to do and put things in perspective!
