Question regarding Red Hill CC
« on: September 27, 2008, 02:19:17 PM »
Did a search and didn't find anything, so forgive a rookie if this has been covered at length
Played with a member of Red Hill CC yesterday.   They claim Dr. MacKenzie for their course, but I have heard many different rumors.  Anybody with an architectural history of Red Hill that would be willing to share would be appreciated
Thanks!

The Red Hill in rancho cucamonga? If so I would say that's incorrect. From what I know the front nine was done by Thomas before he did any of the other LA designs.

Pat,

From what I have found MacKenzie didn't have anything to do with Red Hill. George Thomas did the original nine holes in 1921 (now the front nine I believe), with Billy Bell completing the second nine in the late 1940's.

I grew up not too far from Red Hill and played there a number of times, but in looking at some of the history the club has, as well as talking with some folks there, I didn't see any mention of Mac, nor did anybody ever mention MacKenize as having a presence there.

MacKenzie did do some work at Redlands C.C. down I-10, but I don't think he ever made it to Rancho Cucamonga.
I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Allan is correct, GT did do nine holes and and BB added the other nine. As a side note, Max Behr was slated to do the course as stated by early magazine articles, but for whatever reason the job was done by GT.

Here's a link to the only coverage on this site, including the words of Thomas from Pacific Golf & Motor. Unfortunately the classic strip mall rendering by the emporer has disappeared :'(. Red Hill is a very good course that flies beneath the radar in SCA.
