Chambers Bay [expectation was that it would be good but overrated]

Kiawah (River) [expectation was that it would be boring and cookie-cutter]

European Club [expectation was that it would be terrible, based on comments here]

Olympic (Cliffs) [just thought there was a par 3 course on the other side of the road]

Cuscowilla [expected it would be good, now think it's terrific]

Forest Creek North was a complete surprise to me, I had heard good but not great things about this club/course. The greensites/bunkering are amazing and the mixture of short par 4's with big  brawny one's was impressive. I would encourage anyone to play here if in Pinehurst. It is really that special.                                                              Jack

My first play at Palmetto exceeded my high hopes.  I had studied aerials, old photos, talked to architects that had worked on it, emailed members; everything I could do to get info on it.  It still surprised me how much I loved it.

Plainfield also surprised me.

Ballyneal and Wolf Point exceeded huge expectations.

Oakmont was so much more than a brutal championship course.  I loved it.

Lahinch!  I still do not understand why Portrush and Ballybunion are always ranked in the world top 20 and Lahinch hovers at 50-70.  The former are clearly great courses, but I cannot imagine a much better combination of drama, beauty, variety and pure fun than is offered at Lahinch.  I loved it even though I got demolished on the scorecard playing in very high winds.

Wade:

Some people just hate the blind shots at Lahinch.  I've talked to good players who hate the idea that they can get a GOOD bounce there.

I don't think that I have ever heard a negative word about Cruden Bay.  Every person that I have ever talked to say that it is as much fun as you can have on a golf course.  Look forward to playing it.

I would also add Brookside (Canton).  I was expecting good, but it is a great golf course.  It is one of the best Ross courses that I have ever played. It is right there in the conversation with Scioto and Inverness without the major championship history.  The green reconstruction a couple of years ago is one of the best restoration projects that I have ever seen.

Caledonia (as a relatively new golfer, that course -- which was better than any other I had played at the time -- piqued my interest in golf architecture)

Heathland (expected another MB type course, but have a ball everytime I play it)

Gullane No. 2 (first links course and had low expectations in anticipation of No. 1 and North Berwick)

You're a smart man, Michael.  I played there as a kid for a little bit and upon seeing the finished work after being out of the area for a few years, I couldn't agree more.  The green variety is outstanding and it's a great routing with some nice elevation changes.
I'm headed back next month and I always look forward it.

Interesting comments Jack. If Tom Fazio wasn't listed as the architect the North Course would get a lot more attention here on GCA. I agree with you and think the course is really good.

Shirkey Golf Club - Richmond, MO - is an example of what cheap public golf (rural MO) should and can be....easily in the top 10 conditioned greens I've ever played.  I think it is $30 on the weekend and always in impeccable shape.

Pacific Dunes - knew it would be good after seeing the rankings and press....but that good....I was blown away

Giant's Ridge -  nearly as good as it gets in Minnesota....before playing it for the first time, I hadn't done a lot of research and was wowed.

Gaines County Muni - West Texas - fastest greens in West Texas, awesome

Prairie Dunes - never tire of playing here...gets better every time

Ballyneal - perfect escape, perfect fun, perfect setting - and even after all the press and discussions, it was still better than I thought

Willinger's -  Northfield, MN - most of my fellow Minnesota GCAer's will cringe, I, however, love this course.  Value, setting, and shot values are really fun although it is very difficult

Wild Horse - first experience with remote, rural, sand hills, etc - I will never forget when I was on the practice green hitting my first putt and putt it off the green and a local about 40 feet away looks at his playing partner and seriously says, "Greens are running a little slower today."

Gullane - first UK golf experience, opening approached rocketed over the green

Waterville - way better than what people give it credit for here

Lahinch - I'm with Wade - Lahinch is amazing...probably blew me away more than any course in the UK....just because I had such huge expectations (and wasn't disappointed on these either) for Muirfield, BB, RCD, etc.....

Strange that.  I can see Ballybunion being top dog in Ireland (indeed its a strong contender for the best course I have seen, but Merion may just pip it), but Lahinch is a very close second.  I think it is better than Portrush or Co Down, but I haven't seen it since the redo.  Lahinch is the only Irish course I give 2* out of 3.  Although I was expecting a wonderful course so it really wasn't a surprise.

Ciao

I prefer Lahinch to Ballybunion myself, and I like the redesign work, purists be damned, having played it before and after.
