Centenary of NGLA, 1909-2009
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:25:56 PM »
It just dawned on me, reading Tom Doak's wonderful "Gourmet's Choice" review of The National, that this year is the 100th anniversary of the course's opening.  Pity that the USGA isn't holding a championship there this year.  What a missed opportunity to not have held the Amateur there this year.  Nothing against the superb Southern Hills, of course.  And with the 2013 Walker Cup coming to NGLA, they have all the tournament exposure they probably care to entertain.  Is there any commemoration planned?

Chuck:

We were originally aiming to open Old Macdonald on the 100th anniversary of the grand opening at National -- which was actually in 1910, though the course saw some play in '09.  However, it was decided to move the date a few days back to June 1st, which has been traditional for other courses at Bandon.
