Aerial of the Day #131 (and 132) - 28 Jun 2002
« on: June 28, 2002, 07:01:41 AM »
I did this one awhile ago, and I wish I had left some of the
surrounding features (especially the jiggly ones) in this aerial:

The stumper this week is a bit out of place, as I shouldn't
have done this one so close to another one this week.  Also, I
decided to leave in the surrounding features, such as the fact
that this is on it's own little island and the awesome
mansions around this course.  I still love "discovering" these
courses, as I'd never heard of it before a few weeks ago.:

Despite the beauty of the first course, some players have been known to want to jump the fence to get off the course on one hole for something far more attractive.  ;)

The second course looks "dredged" up from the surrounds, somewhat Lido-like, but much further south.  I hear there is now up to 35 feet of elevation change on what was dead flat land.

Hmmm.  Would Horace Greeley say, "go North in La-la Land"
about #1?

As to #2:  The Floyd brothers learned their craft here.  In
1974, the members were agog that one of the larger homes
actually traded for $1 million!!  Now $20-30 mil isn't
unheard of.  Julio Iglesias bought a home here in the
early '80s and the club wouldn't let him join for quite some
time.

The house in the extreme top left was built entirely of cement
by the CEO of a cement company (Lone Star) and the
extraordinary ugliness of it made him persona non grata at
the club.  He was subsequently indicted for having "arranged"
for the company to pay for it in the first place.

Even though the membership suggests this would be
a "retiree's golf course", this is a pretty darn good layout
with some bunkers that show teeth.  The par 3 12th and
par 4 13th along the water at the top left are particularly
strong.  It's clubhouse is said to be the inspiration for a
similar, better known structure about 50 miles to the north.

It's an awesomely beautiful place, actually.

Paging wsmorrison.

#1 is one of 3 clubs that required long pants for all.  Winged Foot is not one of those 3.

Did Crockett and Tubbs ever do a bust near #2?

Police Academy 5.

#2 apparently has an amateur there who is some kind of good! A friend of mine played against him recently and got a look at his handicap card with lots of rounds on it and not a single round over 68!

#1 is the North course at George Thomas' Los Angeles CC.
Cropped off the pic is the neighboring Playboy Mansion, just
the other side fothe fence behind the 13th green/14th tee in
the far left.  Jungle-like noises can be heard from there,
along with silicone bouncing  :o .  LA North starts with two
par 5's at the bottom and bottom right. Tough set of par 3's.
other clues:

"jiggly" = silicone

other clubs requiring long pants=Baltusrol and Double
Eagle.  Winged Foot is on trial basis for summer allowing
shorts.

Here's GCA write-up:

And #2 is Flynn's Indian Creek, in Miami Beach, FL.  I didn't
mean to have two Flynn's on back-to-back days.  Island was
created by dredging up reclaimed land.  Very private with
celebs such as Iglesias, Don Shula, and Wayne Huizenga
living there currently or in the past.

clues include:

"Police Academy 5" was subtitled "Assignment: Miami Beach "

"Crockett and Tubbs" = Miami Vices two cops on TV.  Never
saw one episode.
