Aerial of the Day #130 - 27 Jun 2002
« on: June 27, 2002, 07:04:07 AM »
I'm never sure how to pronounce this course.  Two co-
accents on the first two syllables or accent on the first, with a
different pronunciaton?

Regardless, I wonder if some of the members follow the
beard and no moustache policy, like the famous nearby
residents do?

Scott:

Accent on first syllable only.

Clue:  Like a course Scott played recently that was the
subject of its own thread, this is one of the great courses in
the area that deserves a bigger reputation.

Clue:  Golf carts here aren't the only buggy's in the
neighborhood.

One accent on the first syllable is correct I believe. You can find some wildlife around this club that you'd never expect in this area.

According to Chip, it would be FLY-casting.

SW VA, where I went to college, was chock full of towns often mispronounced.  They include:  Wytheville, Galax, Botetourt, Staunton, and Pulaski.

Playing golf at this course, the wife could go shopping at all the outlet malls nearby.

Yes, I was thinking of Kelly and Harrison (Danny Glover came to visit them, too).

the title of the turner and douglas flick bears a direct connection to a conflict in days of old between two very prominent english families.

With such strong Dutch/German heritage in the area, you have to wonder why they brought an Irishman in for the design! ;)

I had a little trouble figuring out the original 18 at this club.
This club has 16 (not a misprint) other holes.  A 7-
hole "short" course, and a new-ish nine by a certain "Raynor
copier".  The 7-hole course looks like it could be part of the
original course.

I wonder if Harrison witnessed this course during filming?

This is Lancaster CC, in the city and county of the same, in
Amish Country, PA, by William Flynn.  Pronounced LAN'-cas-
ter, not LAN'-CAS'-ter, as I often heard said.  These are the
Dogwood and Meadowcreek nines, the original 18 at LCC.
There is also the Sunset course, a 7-holer, and the newer
Highlands nine, more open, by Brian Silva (Mr. Raynor
copier - a la Black Creek).

clues include:

"beards w/no moustache", "Dutch", "buggies" = Amish aka
Pennsylvania Dutch

McGillis/Ford movie was "Witness"= a film that took place
mostly in PA Amish country, Lancaster county, partly about
the Amish.  Good movie.  An early movie of Danny Glover's
(as a rare bad guy).  Alexander Godunov was Amish
antagonist for McGillis' heart.  He makes good bad guys (see
Die Hard).  Didn't realize he was dead.

Douglas/Turner movie, War of the Roses, was based on the
feuding real-life story between the Houses of York and
Lancaster in olden times.

Also a lot of outlet shopping in Lancaster.

Could someone refresh my memory, isn't Lancaster one of Doak's "Gourmet's Choice"?

I checked last night, and Lancaster is one of Doak's 31
flavors.  Recent AOTD Westward Ho! was also a Gourmet
Choice.  Of course, so was Merion, done just a few weeks ago.

Sorry, my mistake!  Westward was not an AOTD.  All the talk
of it during the Eastward Ho! aerial clouded my mind.  :-[
