Driving Miss Morangie...
« on: June 18, 2010, 05:53:03 PM »
Glenmorangie is the current sponsor of the 'links' between ads and golf coverage on Sky. It prompted this thought.

One of our old lecturers advocated the notion that the 'golf experience' begins way before the first tee, actually with the initial meeting up of the guys/gals and the drive to the golf course.

I have to admit, there's a couple of drives which have added immeasurably to some of my best golfing experiences.

The A9 to Dornoch is such a beautiful, historic, scenic route full of great Scottish history that I am always enthralled by it. Passing the 'morangie distillery means we're almost there!!!

17-Mile Drive and specifically the section from Pacific Grove round to CPC is forever etched upon my mind, despite the slightly pouring rain.

Glasgow to Machrihanish is another long but beautiful hike. Turquoise ocean and pristine sandy beaches.

Through the Yetts O' Muckhart and up Glen Devon to Gleneagles. Highland Scotland only 30 minutes from home. Wonderful.

Any drives you love?

Martie,

It's time for you to drive the So Oregon coast. Pick the right roads, and you will completely forget that overhyped CA destination.

Phil,
Traigh must be a beaut of a drive. I know where it is - just not sure how to get there!!! ;D

Garland,
Oregon is soooooo on my agenda. Bandon is a definite somewhere in my future. All I need now is a new job for it to become a reality!! ;D

Until then, I can unfortunately only enjoy the splendours of my homeland.

cheers,
FBD.

The last hour before getting to Sand Hills is really cool. You can find a bunch of your own golf holes in the dunes as you drive through that region.

I second the Southern OR coast, really spectacular.

So bad it's good!

Agree with Oregon. Even cutting across a viewing the elk is a nice experience.

The drive around Cape Breton is superb, as long as you stop to play Highland Links.

I love the drive from Elie to Crail, through Pittenweem, Anstruther and Cellardyke along the coast, through the village of Crail and then, finally, over that last hill revealing the view of the sea and Balcomie Links below.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Looking on Google at that trip up from Halifax to Inverness, particularly getting off TransCanada Hwy and north onto 19 along that western coast does look like it has some very alluring views.

So far in my limitted travels, I'd have to give the nod to the Oregon coast ride, and a close second for totally different scenes to the Sand Hills ride.
