Self-Introduction

Greetings All:

I'd like to thank Ben Cowan-Dewar for his help in obtaining my log-in privileges and I look forward to participating on this forum.

About me:

I have been essentially a golf addict for almost 22 years, since I first picked up a club at the age of 14.  With my father's job with the Department of State, we were posted in Mombasa Kenya and quickly joined the local golf club which afforded me the opportunity to play year-round for almost two years.  Check out the link at http://www.nyaligolf.co.ke for the course where I learned to play. 

Not only did I quickly love to play, I also learned to appreciate the history of the sport and the different types of courses.  I received a book called "The World Atlas of Golf" for Christmas when I was 15 and devoured it, as it contained so much information about historical courses and architecture.  With my dad's career taking us all of the world, I had opportunities to play courses in a multitude of settings.  I would wager that I am one of a few people on this forum who has played golf in both Kenya and Iceland, though I may be proven wrong!

These days with a busy career in the Washington DC area as a Systems Engineer working on DOD contracts, and a busy and great family life with my wife and two young boys (ages 6 and 3), my opportunities for playing are a bit diminished but I still follow the sport religiously.  In my days as a lurker on this DG I have gained quite an education about golf history and architecture and look forward to learning more as my time as an active poster continues.

All architects will be a lot more comfortable when the powers that be in golf finally solve the ball problem. If the distance to be gotten with the ball continues to increase, it will be necessary to go to 7,500 and even 8000 yard courses.

Welcome.   I believe Ran has tried to get some participation from golfers in Africa but not with much luck.   

How much golf is available in Kenya?   Is there any public golf.

Hi David

I was told when young that ‘Self Introduction’ has a tendency to make you blind, so don’t do it to often.  Welcome, now that we have the formalities over, what is your opinion on the following:-

1)   Merion
2)   No Walking Courses
3)   Artificial Aids
4)   Carts
5)   Cart tracks
6)   Supporter of  No Walking Courses
7)   Supporters of Artificial Aids
8)   Carts Drivers
9)   Architects who love designing cart tracks

Please consider your answers very carefully before answering as you are bound to upset some group on GCA.com. What ever you do, please do not take the high moral ground or the traditionalist view as that is a red rag to a bull on this site.  ;D >:( ;D

I don’t want or expect an answer but one word of advice, always state your true opinion, because there are many who will probably agree with you, but alas most won’t.  :'(

Played in Nigeria a few times,  up north in Jos, the grass was approx. one blade per square foot rest was red earth, Tees were packed down Termite mounds some 4- 5 yards high with matting at the top. Now that was a real challenge  ::)

Now you have posted and no longer a virgin, you must stop that bad habit of Self Introduction.  ;) >:(

Welcome to the GCA.

Back in 1962,  played in a Home and Home match against the Kenyan national team at Nchanga G.C. in Northern Rhodesia and the return at Muthaiga G.C.

I always wanted to get back but never did.
