Bill Quirin's America's Linksland
« on: May 11, 2002, 07:58:50 AM »
I just received my copy from Sleeping Bear Press and it appears to be just as interesting as his Golf Clubs of the MGA.

Lots to look at and study - a very fine chapter on Engineer's Club, hole by hole analysis on Bethpage and NGLA, Shinnecock's evolution is explored, Timber Point and Lido receive their due, new courses such as Easthampton and Bahto's Stonebridge have well-done profiles, the list goes on and on. In short, from R.I.P. courses to new courses, Quirin covers it all.

Any book on Long Island golf that showcases such courses as Garden City GC, Piping Rock, The Creek, and Maidstone is obviously going to appeal to many on this site. And Quirin's writing and observations don't let you down - for instance,  he notes that Travis's Eden version at GCGC is surely the finest in the country, surpassing any done by Macdonald/Raynor. In addition to the text, there is a healthy mix of b&w and color photos (the one of the 3rd hole at Easthampton in particular is a stunner  :o).

I look forward to getting stuck into this book this weekend - it's $55 well spent.

Cheers,

My copy arrived this morning.  I can see already that the book will be a welcome addition to any golf rchitecture junkie's collection.

Lots to read.  Nice combination of old black and white photos with current color shots.

My only regret is that it was published right before the opening of Friar's Head and it doesn't include much on this course.

While I usually purchase my books direct from sleeping bear press, while browsing for a few DVDs at buy.com I ran across this for only about $35.  Might be a good bargain for some of you students out there.

I got it earlier this week.

Buy.com also has George Bahto's book at a better price as well. Hopefully it will be shipped on time  ::)

I just got my copy a couple of weeks ago and I've only had time to skim through it (I had to read the Prairie Dunes book forst) but I concur with Ran's observations.  The Bethpage chapter is quite good.

I thought the features on Garden City and Bethpage were particularly good.  Some wonderful photography of Bethpage and some of the others as well.

Felt like perhaps National and Shinnecock didn't get their fair share, granted the book was in the year of Bethpage, so that was the focus point.

Great book though, makes me long for Long Island ::)

Guys,

Any book that is written by Dr. Quirin is going to be outstanding and well researched.  His centennial history of Garden City Golf Club (with a contribution by Tom Doak) was outstanding.

A quick scan indicated ZERO reference to the Links Golf Club, a wonderful MacDonald/Raynor layout that went NLE in the early '80s.  When I get my copy, I'm inclined to contact the author and find out why.

Also not much about the old Meadowbrook course (a Devereaux Emmett, I believe).  Didn't see much about Saint George's either - the course Emmett built for himself and his friends (a National wannabe) in Stonybrook.

I'll reserve final judgement until I read it, but there seems to be significant architectural "meat" missing.
