Purgatory located in Noblesville, Indiana.  It is one of the few things at the course that I would change.  It must have been a marketing guy that came up with it... ::)

I knew that would end up here.  >:( ;)

I've read that even Kern winces at the hole names (Stains of The Inferno!), so clearly I'm in the minority - but I think the course name is great.

It describes the course well, it's original, and (most important when the course is in a farm field outside of Noblesville, Indiana, USA) it's memorable!

On a thread some years ago I referred to these, from our side of the pond:

Alcaidesa (Bin Laden's home course?)
El Prat (prattish name)
Gloria Golf (I know we worship the game but this is ridiculous)
Hook (better than a shank, I suppose)
Bled (Japanese for a loaf)
Leidschendamse Leeuwenbergh (Double Dutch)
La Margherita (cheese and tomatoes?)
Matilde di Canossa (married one of the Borgias, if I remember correctly)
Oddafellowa (yes, we know all about them)
Stutgarter Solitude (no fourballs, no foursomes, not even singles)
Baden-Baden (say it slowly, loudly and enough times and they'll understand eventually)
St Barbara's Royal Dortmund (I thought that was a hospital)
Bad Lippspringe (poor ventriloquist?)
Le Gouvernour (the Godfather to you and me)
Bitche (son of a?)
Lery Poses (we've heard all about Lery, too)
Champ de Bataille (I was brought up to believe that golf was a gentleman's sport)
Pornic (an adult's club)
Bondues (ditto)
Ajoncs d'Or (with gold knobs)
Odder (and odder)
Inter-Mol (international trading in strumpets?)
Bishopshire (I've heard of rent boys but this is ridiculous)
Hollandbush (the Dutch don't go in for razors much, do they?)
Haggs Castle (not much chance of a passing knight coming to the rescue)
Kilcock (ouch!)
The Black Bush (I bet you wouldn't be allowed that name in the US)
Beaverstown (here we go again)
Old Head (you hadn't thought of that, had you?)
The Knock Club (if you're looking for them you can find them almost anywhere)
Gay Hill (which did not have that implication when it was founded in 1913)
Western Gailes (and there is no shelter from them)
Effingham (damning 'em, too)
Diss (it's good to know I'll be able to play somewhere when I depart this world for another, lower, one)
Brailes (too many blind shots)
Newbiggin (a Mulligan?)
Feltwell (as it left the club, but it still sliced into the gorse bushes)
Ealing (Lady to bus conductor, 'Is this Ealing?'  'No, madam, it still looks rather sore to me.')
Bury (I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him)
Abridge (too far)
Crook (it's too obvious)
Cockermouth (standard scratch 69?)
Reddish Vale (but has tinges of green and blue, too)
Peover (yes, it really does exist)

I don't like the bird thing for Brora's logo either,

There is a sad story about that logo.  The bird is an arctic tern, and there used to be in excess of 30 mating pairs that laid their eggs on the shingle beach between the golf course and thre sea, out by the 8th hole.  Hence the use in the logo.  20+ years ago you had to carry a newspaper above your head while playing the 7th and 8th to avoid having your head pecked by a protective mummy or daddy.  Now, the shingle beach is disappearing and there are no more than a couple of pairs of terns visiting Brora each year.  Locals think that it is possible that none will be coming, sooner rather than later. :'(

Takes me a while but the sun finally dawns my mind awake.  The fine Hunters Pointe (complete with silent "e" on the end) in Welland, Ontario, Canada, hard by the Welland Canal, decided on a name change two years ago:  Loch Ness Links.  As it happened early on, we thought it was an April Fools' Day joke, as the 'monster' shadow cartoon image was quite goofy in appearance.

Here's my favorite quote from the web site:  "The name of Hunters Pointe has recently been changed to reflect the true Scottish links nature of the course."  I'm sure that Nessie and the folks surrounding her lake will be thrilled to know that they occupy linksland.

The course was designed by Graham Cooke and has some nice faux-links holes and 18 strong ones overall.  It is a very enjoyable and memorable course, now for more than 18 reasons.

Worst logos.....

Thistle Golf Club near Myrtle Beach.  So awful you dont even want to display the complimentary bag tags.

Weaver Ridge in Peoria Ill.  This busy logo takes up the entire left side of the front of any golf shirt it adorns.  It's a mismash of purple, blue, green, pink and brown.  Truly hideous.

I like playing Thistle and absolutely love Weaver Ridge....but even free logo-ed items are immediate candidates for regifting.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!  I had forgotten the spiked purple gem with golf ball broach logo of Thistle.  Loved the courses, though.

Two worst in close proximity and opening only 1 week apart.

The Home Course and Chambers Bay.

Their is no real Chambers Bay and it sits just south of the site of the Tacoma Narrows Bridges, famous for blowing down in the '30's.  The Home course sits on an old dynamite factory site.

Anyone with courage would have called The Home Course, Nitro Ridge and Chambers Bay Broken Bridge (Rapoport can take some credit for that one).  Just think of the logoes and the pursuant hat and shirt sales!

We were discussing the "Putter Boy" logo at Pinehurst while I was there during the Amateur.  Some felt that Pinehurst probably would like to change it but is stuck with it today.  Any thoughts?  I kind of like it.

How about Three Little Bakers Country Club?

While Pumpkin Ridge was named after the ridge that sits behind it, I always hated that they had to continue the theme with Witch Hollow and Ghost Creek.  Originally they were West and East respectively which was fine with me.

I confess that I am an agnostic on two leading bad-name candidates, because they are clearly such fine clubs:

The Country Club
The Golf Club

But I mean, come on. It is like a person being named, "Person."
I'll give the first one a pass as long as people say, "Brookline."

Chuck--There is also "The Country Club" in Salt Lake City. Its usually referred to as SLC Country Club, but so far as I know, its real name is just TCC. Perhaps Kalen can say that one for sure.

I have always thought it would be interesting to name a course that was built on top of a landfill "The Dump"  And not even The Dump Country Club or Golf Club. Just, The Dump. Quite fitting I think.

John -- Might be a little like fishing.  Any good fisherman knows that the best trout streams should be named "Sucker Creek."  Discourage the tourist trade and the canoeists.
And the worst ones should be named something like "Silver Creek" or "Miracle Trout River" or "Laughing Rainbow Brook."

Whistling Straits is a good track but somewhat goofy logo-Looks kind of look the owner on a bad hairday! ;)          Jack

I think Whistling Straits has the coolest logo.  It can double for Herb Kohler, Old Man Winter or whatever greek god it is supposed to be.

Worst name?  Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe, a fine Baxter Spann design in Santa Fe NM.  Our muni is simply called  Marty.   The bi-lingual, prepositional, personal reference to an obscure deceased player is unique, I'm sure all will agree.

I'll second World Woods.  What does that mean?  And the logo is just brutal.  It reminds me of something I would see an airline use.  Love the golf, though.

I agree with Whistling Straits and their logo.  Cool name, weird guy for the logo.  I am not too impressed with Blackwolf Run's logo either.  But, again, the golf is just unbelievable up in Kohler.

The funniest thing about World Woods' name is that it was built by a Japanese group, and none of them could pronounce the name at all!

Worst....anything longer than two words preceding "GC or CC"

and there are numerous other marketing miscues...

The Bog....conjures thoughts of mosquitoes, enviro areas, and swamp ass.

(former course) Gator Hole GC....see above, with the addition of 8-foot toothy reptiles looking for bare legs to chomp on...

Deer Track GC...so the course is a narrow track in the woods?  Also too close to "Dog Track."

So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
