Best courses; worst names or logos?
« on: August 29, 2008, 10:18:56 PM »
Harkening back to the the ridiculous name of the pretty, D minor Spinal Tap song called "Lick My Love Pump", what are the best golf courses with the worst names?  Or at least good golf courses with awful name?  Bad logos on good courses might also be fun?

I'm trying anything to get folks off of the Obama speech thread that is deep onto screen 12 at this point.....

It's a musical trilogy, really.....using a simple algorithm of course quality divided by logo crappiness:

World Woods - perhaps a perfect score here....the logo is that bad
Lawsonia
Spyglass
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Shivas,
I've always liked pasatiempo name and logo.  The whole sombrero, sleepy latino thing is cool.

I have also always gotten a charge out of country club names like "passing the time" or Idle Hour; anything that refers to laziness.

Esmeralda Golf Course's logo is a picture of a horse playing golf.  Can't find the logo unfortunately...

A few course names that used to bother me-

-The Golf Club Scottsdale

-The Course Wente Vineyards

It's almost as if they're saying "we're just a bit better than everyone else, we can eliminate prepositions and disregard proper English." (although I think Wente has added 'at' recently.)

That used to bother me, now it's kind of grown on me.  I'm waiting for a club to take it one step further- no name, just a logo.  Like The Artist Formerly Known as Prince did in the 90's.

I am going to say Tobacco Road is a bad name and a bad logo.

Just mentioning that course should spur some discussion regardless of the topic.

I suppose it should be mentioned that Tobacco Road is the name of this entire region of North Carolina, because of all the old tobacco companies and farms in the area. If that logo is bad, then Tot Hill Farm and Bulls Bay must have bad logo's as well, they are nearly the same as Tobacco Road.

Shivas is right.  Pasa's is awful and look cheap.

I detest Enniscrone's - that rising sun deal gives me a headache.

I don't like the bird thing for Brora's logo either, but on the other hand, Huntercombe's bird deal is growing on me, but its no where near as good as Machrihanish's!

But the prize for the worst logo for a good course is Michigan's.  Its a picture of a green with a pin.  It is one of the cheapest, nastiest thing I have come across and it is especially harsh because they created with the renovations.  Dreadful.

Dismal River

And I'll agree, anything with Trump
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Mark - While I think Tobacco Road is an OK name, I agree about the logo - and, if you don't like that one, you certainly won't like what they did down the road at Tot Hill Farm.

I actually think Pasatiempo has both a terrible name and a terrible logo.

I definitely agree with you here on the logo.  I talked to a member about it and he actually said something along the lines of:

"You'd never believe this but a lot of people actually think it's racist."

When I politely told him that I could imagine that, he defended it by pointing out that Mexican people really do take naps during the day.

I'll second NGLA and offer TCC as being horrible names for courses even though they are really old.

I never liked the logo at Kittansett.  It looks too much like the Shell Gas logo.

A place I like but feel like the logo and motif don't fit the area or course is Bull's Bay.  The body of water north of charleston is called bulls bay so that fits but the whole western thing and the big steer head are odd to me.

I know Strantz was a horseman and maverick and it was a lot about him which i understand.

Purgatory located in Noblesville, Indiana.  It is one of the few things at the course that I would change.  It must have been a marketing guy that came up with it... ::)

As far as "nicknames" go, the worst attempt at a nickname in history was pointed out by Geoff Shackelford on his blog -- it was Ron Rosaforte's discussion of "The Foot", a/k/a Winged Foot.
