US Mid-AM at Milwaukee CC

The US Mid-Amateur this year comes to Brown Deer Park Golf Course (home of the annual Milwaukee stop on the PGA Tour) and -- notably for GCA junkies -- Milwaukee Country Club.

As Ran's recent profile of Ohio's Kirtland CC pointed out, Charles Alison's work is often some of the best -- and least-known -- among Golden-Age architects. The US Mid-Am provides a wonderful opportunity to see his work at Milwaukee CC, a course that is generally regarded as one of the best in Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest, but has rarely hosted tournaments or championships. Similar to Kirtland, Alison used a local river -- the Milwaukee River here -- as a central design element in some of the holes.

The US Mid-Am runs from Sept. 6-11, with stroke-play qualifying at the two courses Sept. 6-7, and match-play Sept. 8-11 at Milwaukee CC. Anyone interested in a GCA meet-up at Milwaukee CC? I hope to be there Sept. 7 -- the Sunday of stroke play -- and perhaps one of the days of match-play as well, depending on family schedules. But Sunday is the more probable of the days. Admission is free, and the course is within easy access off major thoroughfares on the north side of Milwaukee (it's nearly next door to Brown Deer park/course). Fact sheet here:

One of my favorite golf critics in the world is a member of Milwaukee CC.  He was the first guy who ever told me that he didn't care for Sand Hills.

Do you know the course well? I had given serious thought to offering myself as a caddie, but couldn't commit to the time, and have never been on the course.

Other than what I've read...no, I dont have a lot.  But would love to know some tendancies.  I am coming up to do a walkthrough on Wednesday afternoon of next week.  Would love any tips you might have.

I've walked Brown Deer a few times, and it struck me as a pretty typical Midwestern parkland layout, with some tough holes but some quite easy ones as well. A good chunk of the back nine and a bit of the front nine go back and forth over the stream that's a major element of the course, and is used as either something to take into account on a drive or something to play over on the approach. It's a funky 34-36 par 70 course with three par 5s and five par 3s. In past years, they grew the rough quick thick for the PGA Tour stop, but I heard it was a little more forgiving this year.

My main hope for both courses is that they haven't been over-watered during what has been a very dry past two months in Wisconsin. The central/southern part of the state was inundated with rains in June, but it's been incredibly dry the past two months, and I hope both courses have some fast & firm character to them for the tournament.

If I can ask -- who are you caddying for? Some good names are scheduled to be in the field -- Buddy Marucci, George Zahringer, Mike Bell, Wisconsin's Mark Bemowski, Danny Green, and Lefty's brother Tim.

I plan to go, just to walk MCC and see the layout.

What is the arrangement for parking?  I presume there is a shuttle lot somewhere.  I checked every USGA webpage I could think of, the Milwaukee paper website, the club's website, etc.  No info.

For the PGA Tour stop, they usually park cars for Brown Deer on some park property that you can access off N. Range Line Road and/or N. Green Bay Road (Hwy 57). Those lots aren't too far from Milwaukee CC.

The road entrace to Milwaukee CC is the extension of W. Bradley Road, which intersects with N. Range Line Road in between Brown Deer Park GC and MCC. I'm kind of assuming they will have parking on at least two of the grassy Brown Deer Park lots and let folks walk to Brown Deer or slightly further to MCC (but honestly, it doesn't look too far). You really can't access MCC from the east, as its eastern border is the Milwaukee River. There is some on-street parking south of MCC, but in all honesty, it's not much closer than the BDeer grassy lots.

I will be there as well.  My brother (Marc Mandel) qualified and I will be caddying for him!

I am getting into Milwaukee Thursday night, he is playing a practice round on Friday at Milwaukee CC.  He's playing his brown deer practice round on Thursday without me.

I'm looking forward to it and would love to catch up with any GCA'ers that are out there.  I know RJ Daley is thinking about coming down one day.

Feel free to IM me with your contact information, or if anyone has any good info about the course I would welcome that as well.

Jason - could look to your brother. If you haven't been to the Mid-Am before cherish the experience because it  is a blast. Now I've got somebody to root for. Unfortunately I missed a playoff by two shots because of two 3-putts and three penalty shots.

I'll be there in the field.  Does anyone have any local knowledge about the course?  If so, I would love to hear it.  It seems like the kind of course that you may need to play more than once to really understand it.

I will be there Sat/Sun. as a member of the committee. We wear our badges and/or name tags all the time so if you see me please stop me and introduce yourself. I usually stay longer but business requires me to go home earlier this year.

I've played both courses. Very comfortable walks. I think the wether will be good.

Engineer's co-greens chairman, Edward Gibstein will be playing.  He is a great guy with a world class tee to green game.  He is very much involved in trying to complete Engineer's restoration.

Yes, I would like to go down there and meet some of the gang.  It would be nice to have a close place to park, and that first lot inside the gate of BD park off Green Bay Rd might be a possibility.  I've never been to a Mid-Am affair.  Does it typically draw 1000s or 100s of spectators? 

I'm always up for a suggestion to pub and grub afterwords, as well.   :D ;D ;)

At Bandon (my only Mid-Am) there were no fans except a few family members. And there are nor ropes or anything so you will be able to wander where you want as long as you stay out of the way.

I was at the mid am about 5 years ago at Wilmington CC.  From what I remember you can basically park right in the club's parking lot with no problem.  I would assume that's probably still the case.

I played Milwaukee last week and the course is in fine shape.  At par 72 there are definitely some good birdie holes, but for the mid am the short par 5's will be monster par 4's.  The greens are pretty flat and don't have much break so were pretty easy to putt,  but they were running about 11 and if they get them to 13 which is what I heard they will be,  it will be a different story.  No tricks out there,  just a solid, classic course.

Spectators usually consist of family members and a few curious locals. Idoubt I have ever seen more than a few hundred people without tournament credentials on the grounds at any one time.

Parking on the grounds is usually only limited if facilities dicatate it. There was a spectator lot with shuttle service at Bandon, though it was little used. I do not know about the situation at either course in Milwaukee. The Mid-AM web site may have spectator info or you can call the club.
