Pinehurst #2 Fairway Lines
« on: August 24, 2008, 03:07:28 PM »
Tom Doak made some comments on another thread not too long ago about the mowing lines on #2.  Sorry I can't find that thread to add these comments there, but I'm watching the U.S Amateur and the aerials of each hole are very telling.  #11 and #12 have fairway bunkers that are well out of the fairway as do other holes.  I noticed a bit when I played there, but seeing things from above the course really hammers this point home.

Keep in mind, I'm pretty sure those aerial videos were taken during the 2005 US Open as you'll notice the stands in some of the shots.

I watched holes #8 - finish today and fairway bunkers don't really come into play on any of those holes except #8.  The one bunker on #8, the kids were driving it completely over the bunker, so really that one wasn't even relevant.  Hole #13 was playing up at 325 and they were driving the green.

During the broadcast today they mentioned that Mike Davis was looking at having more sandy waste areas - like on holes #3, #11, and #12 - created for the next Open. That would be great news. Now if they would only get the rough bunkers back in play.

The "fairway" bunker on 8 doesn't come into play for good players. I'm not long and even I can drive it over that. The amazing thing was the one guy drove it right to the front of the green on 7!!! That's why they are probably going to move the tee back across the road near the 6th green. It will make the carry over the trees impossible because of the length and the angle.

I couldn't believe that drive on #7 either.  They were also driving #13, but I think they had the tee way up from the usual spot on that one if I recall correctly from my rounds there.

The tee on 13 was up 40 to 50 yards from where it normally is.
