Played Olivas Links this am. Really nice work by Forrest Richardson. Nicely routed, good variety, very playable for all while remaining challenging, good driving course, good green complexes with any option you might want for the short game, not super firm, but still a good example of links golf for the SoCal public player, lots of good solutions to a dead flat piece of ground, reminded me of S. Carolina with some of the marshland, seemed like the dunescape was closer to the play on the back compared to the front, Holes 10-13 was a really good stretch, course appealed to a scratch, a 13, a 20 and a 30 handicapper thrown together in the same group and there were appropriate tees for all, enjoyed seeing paspalum for the first time, really made me wonder why there is not better public golf getting built in SoCal, gives a nice public Daily Double of Rustic and Olivas Links in the same area.

That's about it. Way to go Forrest!

thanks for the report.  Have you played Buenaventura since the redo, and if so what is your opinion of it?

Please pipe down about Olivas - no desire to have any more crowds at my "home" course.  I could not have been luckier with Forrest Richardson's superb redo of Olivas a mere 5 minutes away.

While not as much a fan of Buena's redo, it became a place to get a very quick round in while Olivas was completed. I enjoy the layout but it's length is way too short even for a par 70. The green complexes raise the difficulty but even for a short hitter like me there's not much need for the long irons. The conditions at Buena appear to be fully recovered from a rough start and heavy play.

The options for public golf in the area have exploded in the last few years. Just last week the last nine to complete River Ridge's (Oxnard) 36 opened. There's now 72 holes in a few mile radius.

I have completed the daily daily double of Rustic and Olivas, but have yet to attempt a 54 hole day trifecta by adding Soule.

I was thinking the same thing Brad...we need a course review.  If I lived in the area I'd do it myself!!  :)

Sorry, I didn't have my camera. Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did.

There was a photo review of the new Olivas on GCA. Could not locate it though with a simple search.

I think Forrest will have mixed feelings over that comment!    ;D

Scott, you are probably right. What I meant was that I had not heard much about it, so I was pleasantly surprised.  :)
