No one has mentioned the 5th at Bandon Trails.  Very good short hole IMO with a big green.  The green is wonderfully designed though for a short approach.  This hole probably sees more day to day variation than most of the others mentioned because of the green size and wind.

Jimmy,

You mentioned the 14th at Kinloch. Is the the Nicklaus course in NZ, or some other course?

I wholeheartedly agree with Jimmy Muratt.

Having played PV#10, Hidden Creek#11, Engineers #14, Merion#13, Shinny#11, yada, yada.....

Myopia Hunt Club's #9 is by and far the very best. It introduces H20, multiple pit bunkers, heinous mounding and the tiniest green of the lot...all combining to tighten one's focus (and sphincter). It makes the wedge in your hands feel like an anvil.

Maybe I can nominate another hole on a British Course...

Anyone played Woodhall Spa, Hotchkin Course, 5th hole. 148y, long thin green, surrounded by double-decker bus swallowing bunkers.

Any course with a short par 3, is all the better for having it as far as I'm concerned...

A few others not yet mentioned:
4th at Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster)
5th at Saunton East
4th and 15th at Cavendish
5th at Woodhall Spa (Hotchkin), good call Scott, a really challenging little hole!

Cheers,

James

Scott,

The Kinloch that I'm referring to is the Lester George designed layout in Richmond, VA.  The 14th hole plays about 145 yards and the green pitches away and runs off the back.  The rear bank behind the green is shaved so balls can easily run into the lake that curls behind the green.  There is also a great pin location to the right rear side of the green, the green surface is hidden by a small hillside so you must really trust your line.  A very good golf hole....

Scott and James - tatally agree about 5th at Woodhall - possibly the best green complex i have seen - love it.

17th at Manor House in Castle Combe is very interesting - very steep drop and a choice of 2 greens.

The 6th at Hindhead is very nice

Since they tooks the original back tee out of play, #17 at Sand Hills plays from exactly 150 at the marker.

Superb hole.

#3 at Ballyneal is also top tier.

I played Wolf Run for the first time yesterday. I really like the short par 3, #16. We played the Black tees and it played 116 yards and considerably downhill to one of the tiniest greens I've ever seen. I made a 6 on the first round and a 2 the second. It was definitely one of the most exciting short pitch shots I've ever been faced with.

I am surprised the 11th at Plainfield has not been mentioned.  A truly great (and scary) short hole.

#3 at Yeamans also deserves a mention.  Nothing but fun.

FYI, I think #14 at Grandfather is over 150 yards from the back tees.  Bart Bradley will know for sure.

3 at Yeamans Hall
4 at Oak Hill (West)
8 at Monroe (NY)

4 on the West is as good as it gets for me.  It is a fairly large green, but it is wildly undulating.  This gives it lots of variety and also means that every pin is a test of accuracy.

Your blip:

"I can't go back to the public courses, now. I can't, I won't. I mean, you know what that's like? It's crowded, the grass has big brown patches in it, they don't rake the bunkers. Not to mention the caliber of people you have to play with!

SaddleCreek in NorCal has a scary little par 3, number 11 IIRC, that is only a wedge or 9 iron.  Tough little target with all the trouble left, long, and short.  A great little short hole.
