reminds me of the Guards officer when being picked up by a Navy patrol boat off the beach at Dunkirk in June of 1940. Straffed by Stuka dive bombers and under constant bombardment by German artillery and mortars, life was hell.
Asked by one of his rescuers what was the worst part of the experience, he replied, " My dear chap, the noise, the people."
