Re: Can you Name that Course?? ROYAL COLWOOD

Royal Colwood was just ranked #16 in Canada.  One interesting point I would like to see discussed is which is the better course - Royal Colwood or Victoria GC.  I have only played each course once but I preferred Victoria - it is one of the tightest courses that I have ever seen but it has some fabulous scenery and the holes along the ocean are fantastic.  The 8th is a world class short par 3 that ranks up there with #7 at Pebble.

I posted this on the Restore a Macan thread, but it might fit here as well.

Carl,
I think Gorge Vale, Royal Colwood, and Victoria are all must plays.  But if I were to choose one that I would be willing to insult family members or business associates to go play I think it would have to be Victoria.  The setting at Victoria is spectacular.  I don't necessarily think it is the best golf course of the three, but there are only a few other courses in North America with settings as nice as Victoria, and they are all in Monterey (maybe a bit of an exageration but not much).  The course has some incredible holes along the water, with a few good, not great, inland holes.

Just came across this old thread from 2008 while looking for something else.  Interesting to see the knowledge and lack thereof of Royal Colwood and AV Macan.  Mike Riste's book has covered Macan.

I wrote a profile of Royal Colwood a couple of years ago for the IMO section and here is the link for those interested.

I should make some edits, new information has come up as I have researched the 100 year history of the club.  I am in the middle of writing that history, so maybe when I finish that!
I've seen an architecture, something new, that has been in my mind for years and I am glad to see a man with A.V. Macan's ability to bring it out. - Gene Sarazen

Dale, I'm really excited about seeing Royal Colwood (and Victoria) next month.   Has anything been done to restore #7?

Thanks for the link to your piece Dale. Seems Mac's love of the par 4.5 shows up quite a bit at Royal Colwood.
